SCOTT P36 rexerevssseseens $a 43088 This tournament already has turried up an almost over supply of freak happenings. First there was the gent, who shall remain unnamed in these dispatches, who became so angry on the back nine where he played hide-and-seek with most of the trees that he threw his ball up in the air and swung at it, baseball fashion, with his driver. He caught hold of it, too, and sent the ball But across the wrong fairway. For sudden blowups the palm goes to Frank Kenesson, sports editor of the Frankfort Times. Even after missing a couple of short putts, he was one under par at the end of 12 holes and wound up when he holed out on the 18th green, seven over par. He is ‘a gclfer of proven ability, however, and his nerves were

cess a0ssgesss an

gs calm as a mill pond at twilight

when he stated his round today.

He wasn’t the only one either that had trouble with the trees on the incoming nine. The steady rapping of golf balls smacking trees sounded as though 'there were lumbering operations going on in the vicinity.

Cummings in Trouble

Four pre-tournament favorites from Indianapolis turned in disappointing performances, and one of this quartet, J. I. (Ike) Cummings, of the Indianapolis Country Club, who carded an 85, needs a miracle to get to enter match play for the|2 title. 4 His game looked steady enough but the putting touch wasn’t there. Dick McCreary of the same club|c had a 78 while Bill , Highland, had an ordinary 79 an ard Oliver, Lake Shore Coun lub, posted an 80. Henry Kowal, Clark Espie, Pleasant Run, posted 75's, and while they will be safely in the field if they continue that pace today, their rooters had looked |2 for better things from them. Espie

incidentally, played one of the pret- |. 4

tiest shots of the tournament on the 18th hole. His drive was stymied behind a

+ tree 80 yards out, and in trying to

bend. his second around ‘it, he hit this tree and the hall bounced back |sa almost to his feet.

lofted one over the tree and a few feet from the cup, enabling him to get a five there.

Morey in Running

Still in the running was Dale Morey, Martinsville, the newly crowned State Junior champion.|:

Even with a weak start and shaky 3:00

finish, he was able to get in the 75 bracket by staying:even with par on the middle 16 holes. One of the 72 shooters,| George Shafer, Anderson, is a |baseball player of some note. He broke up a game at Lafayette Sunday| with a timely hit to give the Lafayette Red Sox a victory over Richmond. He was punching a golf ball with the game good effect yesterday. The posse behind David and Kaperak has one consolation. These two finish early and most of the rest of them will know definitely what it will take to grab the medal by the time they hit the turn.

| Rea Park Strong

It was evident also that the Rea Park of Terre Haute boys have a chance to’ walk off with the fourman team title decided on the basis of 36-hole qualifying scores. R. L. Phillips of that city had a 76, Paul Temple a 74 and Allison Patton a 77. While the men are finishing up their qualifying chores a field of 21 women will continue play in a side tournament at Grandview municipal course here. This event for the distaff side is a gross and blind par competition for 36 holes. At the halfway mark, three Indianapolis women held the lead in the low gross division. They are Miss Mary Gorham, Highland, 77; Miss Elizabeth Dunn, Highland, 79, and Miss Dorothy Ellis, Meridian

Arena to Handle Notre Dame Speed Craft.

D. ’ Aug. 1 (NEA) —~From Oakland comes word that Daniel Arena Jr. is coming to Detroit late in August to drive Notre Dame in the Gold Cup on Labor Day. Arena tells friends he i been engaged by Herbert Mendelson to drive the Detroit boat. In last year’s race, Arena’s Miss Golden Gate was the only craft to stay with Count Theo Rossi of Italy, whose Alagi won the cup. Arena’s boat has a new power plant, but the young son of a California wine merchant feels it isn’t fast enough to beat Alagi. Arena would replace Clell Perry, designer, builder, and pilot of Mendelson’s two Notre Dames, the first of which bagged the Gold Cup and two President's Cup races.
