Betty Burbridge, Movie Writer, Is True Daughter of Southwest

OLLYWOOD, July 31.—The West ought to take off its sombrero to Miss Betty Burbridge, the gal who has written more hell-for-

| "leather pictures than anybody else in Movietown.

She is a true daughter of the Southwest. In fact, she was born as far Southwest as possible, in San Diego. Auburn-haired, clear- | eyed, soft-spoken, she has a temper and a sense of humor. Her trigger finger has written ‘The End” ; to many a rustler’s career. i- Seated easily in her high-can- . tled swivel chair, she has pursued killers and bandits from Dodge \ , City to the Rio Grande. Give her -a fast typewriter and she can | throw and tie and brand a cliche “in less time than the hero can | say, “You s foller their trail. Buck and me’ll ride through Skull ; Gulch and head ‘em off at thé pass!” . Youd guess, of course, that her office would be decorated with the usual silver - mounted = saddle, hand-wrought spurs, a wall colJection of six-guns and .30-.30s, a framed original of “Out Our Way” autographed by Jim Williams, and a 10-gallon hat hanging on a set of antlers.

now she has been writing sagebrush opera as a full time job. " Either in original or in collaboration, she has done about 25 flickers, including most of the Gene Aurty’s. Previously, of all things, she was a syndicated expert on home economics, etiquette and child training. Her start in westerns was made about 10 years ago, when, as a favor to a producer friend, she

did some story-doctoring on a cow epic. The studio liked her ideas and she, in turn, decided that. stagecoach bandits were more fun to write about than cheese souffles and chintz curtains. Personally, she never rides a horse “unless it’s absolutely necessary,” which it never is. The nearest she has ever been to a ranch is Palm Springs. For en-

Still Loves Wife, Jackie Maintains

HOLLYWOOD, July 31 (U. P.)— Jackie Coogan, the wistful “kid” of silent films, said today that nearly two years of continual separations and tearful reconciliations, punctuated by financial and legal troubles with his parents, broke up his marriage to Betty Grable, the actress. “Naturally I'm sorry it had to turn out this way but I won’t contest her suit for divorce,” he said. “Anything she does is all right with me. But I still love Betty.” Miss Grable announced after a personal appearance at the San Francisco Fair that she would seek a divorce, and her attorney filed a complaint Saturday. It charged Mr. Coogan with extreme mental cruelty and said he neglected her by remaining away from home.

80 she is now. Anyway, she’s attractive. For almost four years

tertainment she mostly goes to movies—but never to Westerns.
