APOLLO “The ‘Magnifcent
fF “Million Dollar Eegs,” with Betty Grable, Hartley and Jackie: Coogan.
By HARRY MORRISON
Lionel Barrymore, Akim Tamiroff | And: Ginger. Rogers on Local Bills
\ |
Fraud, ? with Akim Tamiroff,
ve Lloyd Nolan, Patricia Morison and Mary Boland.
CIRCLE—"Bachelor ‘Mether,” with Ginger Rogers, “David . Niven and Charles .Gobusn, “Career,” with Edward Ellis, Anne Shirley, Alice
Eden and John Archer.
LOEW'S—“On Borrowed Time,” with Lionel Barrymore, Sir : Cedric Hardwicke, Bobs Watson and Beulah Bondi. “Good Girls Go to Paris,” with Melvyn Douglas, Joan ~ Blondell, Alan Curtis and Walter Connolly.
Ever since Frank Capra made “It Happened One Night” in 1934, Hollywood has been looking for a| successor. “Bachelor Mother,” in my opinion, comes closest to- {that formula. of excellent acting, great direction and smooth comedy flow. When the studio decided to separate Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, they took a big chance. “Having Wonderful Time” seemed to in-: dicate that Miss Rogers wasn’t ready to go it alone, but whatever it| was (it might have been Garson Kanin, her director; David Niven, a marvelous leading man; or just the moon) the young lady of the twinkling toes has arrived ‘as an actress-in her own right. We always knew she was. goad to look at and we knew her. underpinning was very attractive, too, We also knew she .could play love scenes. . But give her some .tough lines. and some situations she can’t wrinkle her nose out of. Then what she'll do? Well, she makes
the ‘loveliest
| mother who isn’t a mother at all
that you'll "ever want to see. She makes a. darn good salesgirl, too.
, And she makes a good jitterbug con-
test winner. Imagine, Irene Castle winning a jitterbug contest! ‘She's just a counter girl, brought in to*work at the great Merlin’s Department Store for the Christmas season. And when the last Donald Duck is. sold, she gets her notice. Off to find a new job she finds a baby on the doorstep of a foundling home. When she takes it inside the, home the officials think it’s her baby. Merlin’s takes her back. She gets a raise. She can't make anyone believe the baby isn’t hers so she keeps it.: She falls in love with the child and when old man Merlin tries to take him away she decides to,run away. Will David Niven, who has loved her all along, let that" happen? Does she love him, too?’ Will she accept the love of a wealthy man? What beéomes of the baby? You can bet everything comes out as it should. Speaking of babies, the one in this show leads us to inquire: “W this Sandy?” Uf] Things to look for: Ferike
whenever she comes on the screen]
(she’s the one who made the comieback as the landlady. in “Love Affair”) and the park sequence when Ginger and David are bragging about their child’s speaking ability. While youre at the theater you might stay and see “Career,” Edward Ellis’ latest picture. Anne Shirley will be there and so will Alice Eden and John Archer, the two youngsters who won their place in the films on that “Gateway to Hollywood” contest. “Career” is fair, not as good as “A Man to: Remember,” but how could
LOEW'S
“On Borrowed Time” is front the stage play of the same name and aside from the concession to the movie audience of letting us in on who Mr. Brink really is, it follows the play faithfully. I'm not going to tell you who Mr. Brink really is, either, but in accord with a Loew's management request I will warn you to [try to get there for the beginning of the show. you don’t ‘you'll ‘lose a lot of fhe bang of the picture. : The stars of this piece are, in(my opinion, not Lionel | Barrymore | someone else, but Bobs Watson and Sir Cedric Hardwicke, whov and Mr. Brink respectively. Bobs Watson: has a whole gang of sisters and brothers who have been on the stage and in the movies be-
fore him. Therefore he has an
honest heritage teaching him what to do and what not to do. He and Terry Kilburne are: about the cream of the little boy crop for the season and Bobs may have a little edge on Master Kilburne. Lionel Barrymore is perfect in his part, but he does everything in just| the same way and I. don’t believe I've seen him react differently to the same circumstance since I started seeing him in pictures. And, after all, he does take supposedly different roles. A stranger comes to visit the Gramps’ homestead. Granny dies. Gramps gets the visitor cornered up in the apple tree and he won't let ‘him down because he has designs on the rest of the family. - He keeps him up there until everything is straightened out. Sadly enough, he can’t keep him up there long enough because he realizes everyone has a job and Mr. Brink has to do- his, too. Loew’s sent me an apple this morning from-the tree Gramps had Mr. Brink in. It was ina green fiorist’s box and all done up in green paper. - Do you think I'd eat it? I should say not! .. . The other picture is “Good Girls Go to Paris.” It was originally titled «Good Girls Go to Paris, Too,” but the Hays office said that gave {the wrong impression. i Douglas and Joan Blon-
“dell make this an interesting enter-
tainment after a slow beginning. Watch Alan Curtis, because some day he’s going to be a Stat} a0

This “Magnificent Fraud” is just the kind of show I think we all like. It’s not too long, it has Akim Tamiroff being a lot of people at different times: it has Mary Boland; it has a

South American intrigue; it has a beautiful new ingenue, and ‘above
all, ‘it doesn’t try to be anything but entertainment, Those publicity releases had me
Danced for a Dictator” and “Dictator or, Double” plastered all over everything. I kept thinking of the
Mr. Hitler and I wondered if we were going to have to think and We frightened again all. at the same time. As it turns -out the show might have been made in the Roaring Twenties for all the hoot it gives about subversiveness or ideologies or “pointing out” of morals. There’s going to be a loan o2 small South American country. The loan has to be sighed by the Dictator. Don’t ask me why. The Dictator is blown up. They get an actor to .take his place until the loan is all signed up and in cold. storage. The plan works fine except, too bad, the actor is shot and killed. He turns out to be a pretty good sort of man and he names as . his’ successor someone the bad opposition Sossn¢ like. Meanwhile our somewhat questionable hero (he’s from Chicago) is locked up in a dungeon awaiting execution. The ingenue, Patricia Morison, with the new president, hasten to his rescue. They get there in time. But remember, there is no chase, no chase. Come to think of it “The Magnificent Fraud” is a very good picture. First, because it’s just plain fun in a banana ° republic where nothing is real. We can take!it or let it alone. Second, , because Akim Tamiroff makes a lot of faces. Third, because there is no chase.’ Miss Morison (one “r” please) is very beautiful, but I don’t think she'll ever pass her algebra. She has a very fine figure, but she plays ingenue as if it were golf. You can’t say too much for Akim. You'll recognize Duval, the detective, as Ernest Cossart, the erstwhile player of butler roles. The other picture is-‘ Million Dollar Legs.” Betty Grable shows her legs and is improving as an actress. If you look hard enough you'll notice poor Jackie Coogan once in a while __The story is about a college that eds money for sporting equipment. The students bet on a horserace and
get their shell for the crew, but the|
coxswain is disqualified because he handled the bet. They win the race, anyway. I
