Charles Mitchell Creates His Own Industry.

. When the steel mill where he worked ceased operation two years ago, Charles Mitchell set out a patch of field corn as an experiment. - Today, as a result, he has applied for a patent on a new corn relish. The ingredients are field corn, cabbage, mangoes, celery seed and vinegar. Mr. Mitchell considers his relish

a personal solution of the unem- :

ployment situation, a delight to the palate and an aid in reduction of surplus crops. Mr. Mitchell has conducted his experiment on his step-father’s farm

2(WHOLESALE TRADE VOLUME STILL HIGH

NEW YORK, July 29 (U. P). — Wholesale trade activity continued nally high rate this

at a contra-seaso! week, but retail business contracted moderately from last week’s level, Dun & Bradstreet, Inc., reported today. In its weekly trade review, the

authority observed that the depleted state of most retailers’ inventories,

coupled with the relatively high rate Se]

of retail sales, has bolstered the nation’s wholesale markets. “Purchases by ultimate consum-

ers are being translated almost im-|2

mediately into sales for wholesalers,” Dun & Bradstreet said. “Added to replacement sales by wholesalers last week were orders for fall merchandise, much of it wanted for quick delivery.”

Despite ‘the small decline in re- May

tail volume as compared with iast

week, sales for the country as a|De

whole were 5 to 10 per cent better than in the 1938 week. Demand for the heavier and more expensive types of consumer goods remained strong. Dun & Badstreet reported that the best gains over last year were re-

SHORT COVERING BOOSTS WHEAT

High American Markets, “Fear of Crop Damage - Aid Prices.

CAGO, July 29 (U. P)— Wheat was firm on the Chicago Board of Trade today, reflecting fears of crop damage in the spring wheat belt and higher North American markets. Short covering near the close boosted prices more than a cent, and at the close wheat was up % .cent to 13% cents, September 65% cents, corn was up % to % cent, September 42% cents, and oats were 3% to % cent higher, September 277% cents. There was some buying of wheat at the start credited to milling interests. Firmness in the spot market and purchasers of futures by cash grain interests also gave prices good support. Reports from the Canadisn domestic spring wheat areas plained of 100 decree tempera which were feared to have da the crop. Winnipeg gained most of a cent in early trading, but lost some ground in later dealings. Minneapolis and Kansas City were firm. Traders paid little attention to a 1 cent decline at Liverpool. Corn prices followed an irregular trend.

‘Barely before the ‘anschluss, Pail Lowenberg skipped ouf of Vienna|pe with his 1644 examples of old music, most of them by Johann Strauss the Younger, Mr: Lowenberg, a railroad man with a love of music, came to America. The Library of Congress heard of his Strauss collection and purchased it about a year ago, shortly before Mr. Lowenberg’s death. And tomorrow, Howard Barlow ahd the Columbia Broadcasting Symphony, through the Library's co-operation, will introduce several unfamiliar examples of the Waltz King’s genius (1 p. m., CBS-WFBM). Out of 1644 compositions acquired in the collection (including music by Johann Sr.. Eduard and Joseph Strauss and their contemporaries, Joseph and August Lanner) Mr. Barlow has selected 10 works of the younger Strauss. They are the “Electropher” Polka and “Motoren” Waltzes, dedicated]: to a group of technology students; the “Paroxysmen” Waltzes (decidedly a jitterbuggy title), written for a medical fraternity ball; “Ballg’schichten Waltzes, composed for a

“Champagner-Polka,” an early and humorous work; “Aesculap” Polka, another of Strauss’ nine works dedicated to the medical profession (the title for Aesculapius, reek god of medicine). “Explosions,” a polka and “SerailTanze,” written when Strauss was 22 and 19, respectively, and a “Festival” Quadrille, a set of six dances based on several h melodies and including, of all things; an arrangement of the Civil War song, “Just Before the Battle, Mother.” 8 8 =»

Frank Black, conducting the NBO Orchestra, has chosén an all-Amer-ican program for his broadcast at 6 p. m. tomorrow on NBC-Blue. The three listed compositions are Henry F. Gilbert's “Riders to the Sea,” obviously inspired by Synge’s play; a descriptive piece by Robert Russell Bennett, titled “Hollywood,” and the “Tall City” Sule by Vienna= born Hans Spialek.

fa sins ] : Tomorrow's concert by the Nae tional Symphony Orchestra from the Potomac Water Gate in Washington brings a newcomer to the dium in the person of Burle Marx. r. Marx is the highly-touted Brazilian conductor, and his program includes music by his eminent compatriot, Villa-Lobos: Two excerpts from the suite, “Bachiana Braziléria,” No. 2, with Virginia Johnson, soprano, as soloist. Miss Johnson also will sing an aria from Mozart's “Marriage of Figaro.” Another soloist, Howard Mitchell, is to do two movements of the Lalo Cello Concerto.
