| TOMATO QUEEN |
‘TOBE CROWNED IN ELWOOD FETE
Stabilization of Canning Industry Urged in Wallace’s Speech.
Times Special ELWOOD, Ind. July 28. — The coronation of Miss Judith Wright, Elwood, as 1939 tomato queen, a Pageant and a ball in honor of the queen will feature today’s tomato festival program. ‘As festivities continued, growers
and canners reviewed the address|
last night of Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace in which he urged stabilization of the canning industry. He blamed this year’s downswing in the industry, the fourth since the ‘World War, on surpluses.
Honored at Dinner
Preceding his address, Secretary Wallace was honored at a dinner.
It was attended by Lieut. Gov.
Henry F. Schricker, Purdue University officials and William Settle, & national AAA director. Speaking of the “wide fluctuations in volume of output and price,” Secretary Wallace said: “The question is, can anything be done to level these mountains of surplus into the valleys of shortage? Can the Ever-Normal Granary prineivle be applied to the canning industry Can the industry be on a basis of abundance, 80 as to keep in step with the ex-
banding needs and expanding pur-|
chasing power of consumers?” Citing obstacles which may hinder stabilization, he listed lack -of marketing agreements, unorganized | canners and the lack of understanding between those who produce the fruits and vegetables for canning and those who work in canning plants. : Low Wages Cited
“Farmers, perhaps, fail to realize
that of all wage earners in the
United -States, these groups are among the lowest paid,” he continued. “They can get employment of this kind for only a brief period, and yet they must live somehow the rest of the year. “The canning factory workers and their union leaders, on their part, sometimes fail to take into consideration” the fact that despite the farmér’s long hours of backbreaking labor his return is pitifully small.”
