Worey and Gilmore Classed _ As Giant Killers in State Golf Competition.

BULLETIN RICHMOND, Ind. July 27 (U. P.).—Dale Morey moved to the state junior golf semi-finals today ‘by eliminating Robert Stackhouse, Indianapolis, 7 and 6. Francis Gilmore bowed to the sharpshooting

of Stanley Sisler, South Bend. Sis- |

ler took the match one up.

! RICHMOND, Ind., July 27 (U. P.). Dale Morey of Martinsville and Francis Gilmore of Columbus today were classed as the giant killers of the State Junior golf teurnament as eight survivors from the field of 32 qualified for ‘the championship flight went into quarter-final play. Morey, who qualified at 154, eliminated Jack Clements of Richmond whose 143 gave him medalist nonors at the 19th hole yestérday. orey’s brilliant chip shots kept him in the running during the match and he cancelled a one-up advantage which Clements held at the midway mark and won with a par on the 19th.

Gilmore smashed out a stunning 4-and-3 upset over James Guinnup of Seymour, runnerup for the title last year. Guinnup qualified at 149 compared to Gilmore's 158. : The eight remaining contestants will play the 18-hole rounds today and cut the field to two finalists who. will play 36 holes tomorrow for the championship. Pairings today are: Gilmore vs. Stanley: Stsler | | of South Bend. Morey vs. Robert Stackhouse of Andianapolis. Don Elbel, South Bend, vs. Bill McClure, Richmond. Fred Link, Ft. Wayne, vs. Henry) Timbrook, Columbus. In other second round matches yesterday Sisler eliminated Robert Phillips of Indianapelis, [4 and 2; cClure downed Don Wall of loomington, 4 and 3; Elbel squeezed out a 1l-up victory over Richard Freeman of Crawfordsville; Stackhouse trimmed Dan Cravens of Franklin, 2 and 1; Link beat Gordon Muelhausen of Logansport, 4 ‘and 3; and Timbrook whipped Mapspal Sharp of Columbus, 4 and 2. :

allow his opponent to tie ‘him up at 2-all in the games of the second set, but he tightened then to run the match out. = Both he and Tidball when they found themselves in slight trouble remarked half aloud: “Now I've got to hit ’em hard.” : This must have shocked their opponents who were under the impression that sort of thing had been going on for some time. Frederick W. Hunt, the boss of ‘this tournament, had plenty of troubles yesterday even if the “big name” players did come through all right. In the first place the whole program was rained out Tuesday, necessitating a doubling up of a few matches. Then a boy and a dog had walked across the wet Highland courts

early yesterday morning leaving a|

trail that it wouldn't take an Indian to follow. Two of the courts were out of commission all day and some of the matches, including first round competition in the women’s singles and men’s doubles, had to be transferred to Woodstock Country Club. Finally, over the steady humming

sound the racquet strings made, |=

there was the steady pop-popping of balls-that had come apart. The boys must have used up two or three dozen new ones, which is quite an item is nothing more useless than a broken tennis ball unless it is a soda fountain in a deserted village.
