JANE JORDAN-_
22 years .old and his
awake at nights in fear of him.
EAR JANE JORDAN—Ten years ago I married a man who had an afflicted son. We gave much thought to this boy and agreed to place him in a sanitarium, just for our own happiness. He is now mind is slightly improved. Unkind stories have been circulated which have caused me to lie wonder if it was the right thing to do? Could I have been so wrong in trying to be happy?
TROUBLED,
Answer—No, certainly not. Besides you did the very best. thing: you
could have done for the boy. There is a special technique for the care of subnormal children which you and your husband have had no
opportunity to learn. Many attendants in sanitariums for such cases |
have had years of training. You could not possibly equal their skill in caring for a mentally afflicted boy. Moreover, sueh a child cannot function well in: an ‘environment
| peopled only by normal children. It only emphasizes his trouble and “He is
makes him the center of adverse curiosity and often ridicule. better off in a restricted -envirorfment where other children are in the
same boat and must follow the same routine of health and training.
It is more than senseless to expose the child to others so .unlike himself: It is downright cruel.
I do not know what adverse eriticism you have incurred. <I pre-
sume it is some variety of sentimental gush which holds that: parents
should. love their children enough to make any sacrifice for them '
whether it is beneficial or not. Try Quiet Snub If Child Balks,
Expert Advises
By. OLIVE ROBERTS BARTON It is rare to see almost any child today, obeying at once or without protest. I think there is something wrong with the picture, and so do many. others. ‘Naturally we don’t want spineless little weaklings in our. families, or mere copy cats, or _yes-men, But.a
child may have freedom and “will,
and still listen . when his ‘ parent speaks.
Jimmy wants to throw a. ‘hard-ball :
against the house. - It makes a thunderous noise within. Mother calls from the. dodr,’ “Don’t do that, Jimmy. . It worries me.” - . Jimmy, however, : likes. to -aim’ at the spot between. the: bay window and. the front door and continues to try his skill! Again mother calls out to stop it. This tirne it is worth an argument. “I won't hit anything. And I won't throw so hard. I'am learning to aim.” : Next time, his mother has to. put herself ‘into the position of seeming unreasonable. She says, “Now step all your talking and do as I say. It is no use arguing any more. I want you to stop right this minute.” Then grumbling -and cross, Jimmy: throws|his ball on the grass and stops his “practicing” altogether. “There is one good way to straighten out such. a child. . That is to speak once. And - when Jimmy doesn’t pay any attention, then to] keep quiet. The next step is to ignore him for a while. No favors, no smiles, just a quiet manner that shows no interest whatsoever. It can be played, such a role, without breaking the child's heart, and at the same time, salting his mind a b d

Week-End Food Should Be Good Even if Simple
"By MRS. GAYNOR MADDOX Week-end eating calls for planned simplification. Good food, :certainly,
menu picture. But not elaborate food and not cooking that keeps mother or someone else in a state of work and worry when she should bes relaxing with the others. Years ago I used to go on long hikes over. the week-end up into the mountains of California. My mother
be “just ‘as delicious and as wholesome as home cooking.
From her I learned that week-end food, on a hike, a motor trip or in the ‘week-end house in the woods, can and should be planned and prepared with intelligent consideration for balance, interest, cost and the circumstances under which it is to be cooked. : A large meat loaf, prepared in advance, spaghetti or potatoes, boiled in advance and ready to be turned in dishes with cheese or potato salad, ‘a bowl ‘of green salad with simple dressing, long loaves of fruit bread :made in *advance—all ‘these packed. in a hamper and taken to the week-end house will be your portabje . pantry which can simplify the problem of what to eat.
