LOCAL TRADE IN FIRST 6 MONTHS TOPS 1938 MARK

But C. of C. Reports June Poorer Than May; Drop General.

Although business in Indianapolis was poorer in June than in May, it was better the first half of this year than the first half of last year, the Chamber of Cemmerce reported today. In its monthly Indianapolis Business Review, the organization said that most phases of business here showed declines in June from May with the exceptions of employment and payrolls which rose slightly “reflecting encouraging business and industrial activity.”

Employment Gains

Permit valuations reflected that building activity was under that in May and the previous June but that total and residential valuations the first half of this year were “far ahead of those for the corresponding period of last year.” Bank clearings and debits were less than the previous month but higher than June, 1938, and higher in the six-months’ comparison. Postal receipts, inbound and outbound carloadings declined from May but exceeded last year in sixmonths totals. Postal receipts and outbound carloadings were higher than last June. The employment gain in June over May was .7 per cent, according

Building permit valuation for the first six months this year was $8,239,272, “nearly 3% millions above the total for the corresponding period of 1938,” the business review stated. “Residential building valuation for the first half of this year also was well ahead of the first six months of last year, though the June total was less than that for May and for June of last year.” Bank clearings, over the six months period, gained nearly $42,000,000, and debits increased more than $89,500,000. Post receipts increased nearly $100,000 for the six | months period. The review stated the number of telephones, street car passengers, water accounts, new cars sold and air passengers were greater in June this year than in June, 1938.

WPA Personnel Drops

There was a slight decrease in WPA personnel from May and a drop of 2991 from June last year. There were 19.214 persons receiving relief in Center Township in June, 1668 fewer than in May and 1452 fewqr than last June. Job insurance henefits in the Indianapolis district rose 6.4 per cent in| May and 24 per cent above the! previous June. |

“To compensate you for all your troubles I will give vou the THIRD PART OF THE SAID SUM.” The letter was signed in the name of a go-between who lives in Mexico. Mr. Seidensticker said several similar letters had been received by Indianapolis persons. “Everything practicable has been done to have foreign authorities apprehend and punish operators of this scheme,” Mr. Seidensticker stated, “but the best way tc prevent any swindie 1s to expose it first.”
