By HENRY SUPER United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, July 10.—The pick of the nation’s golf professionals, march out on the sun-baked fairwavs of the Pomonok Country Club | today on the last qualifying round | of the 22d P. G. A. tournament. | And when the sun sinks behind | the nearby World's Fair tonight, 43 | of them get one-wav tickets for home while the 63 low scorers for the 368 holes of medal play, and defending Champion Paul Runyan, move into hand-to-hand match play tomorrow tn decide which two shall play for the championship on Saturday. Ralph Guldahl and Sam Parks, former Open champions. and Fay Coleman, the 1936 medalist, set the pace yesterday. They scored 68s, four under par, ds 21 players shattered regulation figures on the first qualifying round and 20 equalled it. The consensus was that the qualifying score will be 150 or better. Most ot the “name” players were under the 73 bracket when play started. today but last year's] runnerup, Sam Snead, was In danger. Golf Strike Ends After Great Confusion; Henry Was There.

By HENRY M'LEMORE United Press Staff Correspondent EW YORK, July 10.—I missed the retreat from Moscow, 1 was not present when the Union soldiers left pell mell from Bull Run No. 1. Rut. insofar as high confusion is concerned. T have not lived in vain. When my grandchildren gather avound my knees, day after tomorrow, 1 will be able to tell them that 1 was present, at the Pomonok Country Club, when the professoinal golfers of America went on strike. It was the only stand-up sitdown strike in history. Sit-downers charged from room to room, from conference to conference. Confusion was SO rampant that Walter Hagen, that loose leaf page from Esquire Magazine, made two public appeavances Without a tie on, and with his cuff links unsnapped. Gene Sarazen swirled here and there with one gaiter flapping, and Johnny Farrell, long recognized poy Mrs. Farrell as the world’s best dressed golfer, attended two conferences without a change of clothes.

» x

»

XCITEMENT reached such a crest in midaftermnoon that Ryron Nelson, National Open | champion, changed expression: Ralph Guldahl quickened his pace from a shuffle toa slow glide, and Horton mith was caught buying (and paying for) a soft drink. The cause of it all—Denny Shute—was a one-man shuttle from the room where the players were striking, and the room where the executive committee sat in perspiring, if not solemn, session. It was not until midafternoon, hours after the tournament was scheduled to begin, that the committee gave in and said Shute could play. even though he was two days late with the payment of his dues. While the controversy between the committee and the players raged upstairs, the members of the Pomonok Club and the spectators who had paid good money to see the stars in action raged downstairs and out of doors,

» » »

NTERPRISING young men began hammering together sandwich boards for picketing, while cooler neads put through calls for John L. Lewis, William Green and Madame Secretary Perkins. One young radical flopped himself down in 2a sand trap and said he would not move

| until played out with a niblick,

The strike ended much, much more quickly than it started. Overcome by the heat of their own arguments the executive committee suddenly threw open | the door of the conference room, staggered out, celuloid collars awilt, and said Shute could play, despite his heinous crime of being two days late with his dues. By this time a bridge game was in progress in the strikers’ room and the sit-downers, really &itting now, hated to leave. But Walter Hagen, desperate for a lemonade, led his fellow revolters (not to be confused with Johnny Revolta, who was one of the few big name golfers not to participate in the strike) out of the room.

Peace! Ain't it wonderful!
