NE W YORK STOCKS

By United Press

| NEW YORK, July 10 (U. P).— | Stocks edged cautiously higher today in one of the dullest sessions of the year as traders awaited clarification of the international | political situation. Business news,, with exception of | steel operations, continued favor- | able but few traders were es to extend positions in view of | the delicate international situation. | Most traders believed that Britain's) warning to Germany regarding Danzig would lift tension tempo-| rarily, but that factor was offset by! increasing trouble in the Far East. Bonds were firm in quiet trade. Foreign liens were mixed. Chrysler, one of the most active | stocks traded, reached 703, up 1!s. General Motors hovered around its ious of 45%. U. S. Rubber held {a small gain over the 40 level. Cop{pers were fairly active on narrow. | American Smelting rose almest a point, but held only about half the advance. A. T. & T. moved up nearly 2|G | points, while Allied Chemical, Na- | tional Steel, Lone Star Cement, | | Parke, Davis, U. S. Rubber pre[ferred and Peoples Drug Stores gained 1 to 2 points.

Selling in the local wheat pit was encouraged by bearish outside markets, anticipation of a favorable Government crop report, and an increase of more than 14 million bushels in the domestic visible *| wheat supply last week. At the close wheat was off 1 cent to 115 cents, July 6515, corn was off 5% to 34 cent, July 455%, and oats | ware unchanged to i cent lower “ [July 203%. Liverpool wheat closed 1% | to 13; cents lower at the cheapest | prices since 1931, and Winnipeg was off a cent to the lowest levels in six years. Minneapolis wheat was relatively |n

kets. Optimistic reports on spring wheat conditions stimulated selling. |g World wheat shipments of 12,537,000 bushels last week and an increase of 2,572,000 bushels in supplies on ocean passage caused active liquidation at Liverpool. North American export wheat business was

All corn futures dipped to new lows for the season. Weakness in wheat and favorable crop news dis-

NEW YORK, July 10 (U.P).—|

|uled to operate at 49.7 per cent of |capacity this week, a gain of 11.2 points, or 29.1 per cent over the

rate last week, the American Iron Sout RY

& Steel Institute reported today. Operations last week, curtailed by | the Independence Day holiday, were | at 385 per cent of capacity, down

8 | preceding week's 54.3 per cent level. | The rate a month ago was 53.1,

per cent and a year ago 323 per|

cent. The comeback from the preceding

week’s rate was considerably smaller s

than had been anticipated in most quarters. Many steel observers had predicted that operations for this week would recover to around the level which prevailed prior to the July 4th holiday week. It was indicated that extent of the recovery was held down by relatively low operations in the Chicago District. Operations in the] Youngstown and Pittsburgh districts | were believed to have recovered! most of the loss of the holiday week. NEW YORK, July 10 (U.P.).— ucts by subsidiaries of the U. S.
