"GOOD MUSIC" By James Thrasher The man who first brought George Gershwin’s name into international prominence is seeing to it that the American public does not forget that

name, or the music that goes with it. For the second consecutive season, Paul Whiteman will conduct a Gershwin memorial concert when he takes over Howard Barlow's 1 p. m. spot on CBS-WFBM tomorrow. Apparently these programs are planned as annual tributes to the memory of the young composer who died July 11, 1937.

services of the regular Whiteman orchestra and members of the Columbia Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra. Soloists will be Jane Froman, soprano; Roy Bargy, Frank Signorelli and Rosa Linda, pianists, and the Modernaires quartet. During the broadcast, Mr. Whiteman will receive Radio Guide Magazine’'s medal of merit as the “foreHos interpreter” of Gershwin's muS The program lists five items of “more serious intent,” and nine of the best-loved songs from musical comedies and motion pictures. Included in the former list, of course, is that inevitable item of Gershwin liturgy, the “Rhapsody in Blue.” Miss Linda will play the “Cuban Overture,” which she played at Mr. Whiteman’s Carnegie Hall concert last Christmas, and Mr. Bargy will be represented as arranger in his transcription of three of the piano preludes, as well as playing the solo parts in the Rhapsody. Two excerpts from Gershwin's folk opera,

ular tunes. Gershwin, at the time of his death, was a composer of considerable promise in the higher musical brackets. But he already had established an impregnable reputation with his lighter works, and it is likely on them that his eventual fame will rest. » » » Gilbert and Sullivan's “The Mikae do” seems to be coming around to its original form again, after a couple of light hearted side trips into Tin Pan Alley. A straight and unswung movie version is on view at the Circle this week. And tomorrow night five of the popular selections (just as Sullivan wrote them, too) will conclude the broadcast by James Mele ton, Francia White and Don Voore hees' orchestra at 7 o'clock on CBSe

Tomorrow's concert will enlist the WFBM

It is quite possible that the Savoyard classic's swing excursion has won it some new friends who will listen to the “straight” version toe morrow evening with an added ine terest and appreciation, » » 8 It's the NBC Orchestra, mark you, and not the NBC Symphony, which Frank Black will conduct on NBCBlue at 7 p. m. tomorrow. Doubte less it is built around the admirable winter season organization, with some inevitable personnel changes brought about by summer vacations. For the first of his four appear ances with the orchestra, Dr. Black has programmed three compositions, Included are Hans Spailek’s “De’mon’ Variations, listed as a free paraphrase on Rubinstein’s “Dee mon,” being accorded a world pree miere on the broadcast; Galzoue nov’s “Carnaval” Overture, and the so-called “Adelaide” Concerto of Mozart, with Oscar Shumsky as
