~ CITY FUNDS UP ~ $57,567 DURING LAST 6 MONTHS

Miscellaneous Receipts for General Account Rise To $189,566.

Miscellaneous receipts collected in the first half of 1939 for the City’s general fund totaled $189,566.42, which is equivalent to the amount 39 cents on the present Civil City

tax rate would raise, Controller's figures showed today. This figure exceeded the $131,998.54 paid into the general fund in the first half of 1938 by $57,567.86. This year’s increase was accounted for principally by the “gift” of $50,000 to the general fund from the City Utilities District from operating profits of the Gas Co. in lieu of taxes. Receipts to Be Studied

City Controller James E. Deery will begin a study of receipts which wil be used as a factor in computing the 1940 tax rate. There was a $6575 increase in controller’s fees which partially accounted for the general rise in collections this year. There was a decrease of $4006 in Court fines and fees in the first six months of the year compared with the same period last year. A total of $5448. chiefly in traffic fines and costs, was collected this year compared to $9484 collected up to July 15, 1938. No report was made on Court collections for the first six months of last year.

Sticker Income Drops

The Utilities District donation, which was not made last year, was computed in the miscellaneous fund. Subtracting this, there was $16,-

965.40 collected in unclassified receipts compared with $12,480 received last vear. Traffic sticker payments netted | the City $6253 in the first six months

compared to $7980.75 a year ago.

Licenses for private fireworks display totaled $225 this year compared to $50 in the first half of 1938. The Municipal Asphalt Plant returned $1488.27 in operating revenue compared to $1187.95 the first half of last year. Franchises totaling $3000 for the first six months remained the same as in 1938.

STORM LASHES PITCAIRN ISLAND

Roads, Orchards Washed Out; Some of Land Swept Into Ocean. OAKLAND, Cal, July 6 (U. P.)) — A detailed description of a three-

hour cloudburst, which ravaged Pitcairn Island, where the survivors

of the mutiny of the Bounty still

reside, has just been received here) by Mrs. Kathryn Greenwood, Who keeps in constant correspondence with inhabitants of the island. So terrific was the cloudburst, Mrs. Greenwood was informed, “that if the village had been struck by the full force of the storm, we would have been washed out into the Pacific Ocean.” The letter to Mrs. Greenwood was written by Lucy Christian, great, great granddaughter of Fletcher Christian, leader of the Bounty mutineers. The cloudburst, she said, washed out roads, orchards and everything that felt any great amount of its force. ‘When it ceased,” Lucy Christian wrote, “there was damage on all sides, some of the land had been washed into the ocean, and seven inches of water stood in the little settlement and in the island valleys.” But severe as it was, the cioudburst was no great catastrophe to the sturdy survivors of the mutineers, the letter said. Instead, it was regarded by many of them as merely an interesting event that would provide work for both men and women who have little to take up their energies. Mrs. Greenwood, who makes herself an authority on Pitcairn Island by means of her correspond-

Janitor Lists His Debts at One Million

PITTSBURGH, July 6 (U. P) —Joseph Barad, 56-year-old synagogue sexton, of Pittsburgh, who immigrated to this country 385 years ago from Rumania to seek his fortune, was convinced today he hadn't done so well. His financial statement, contained in a voluntary bankruptcy action showed the ex-broom peddler’s assets to be $31.22—his debts, $1,295,550. Barad explained that he accumulated the $1,295518.88 deficit by acting as a legal debtor where the real principals in the transactions desired to escape legal liability. Serving as & “strawman” netted him $3 a signature and the seven figure debt, when many of the mortgages were defaulted.

WORKERS SEEK T0 BUY PLANT

Prepare to Pool Own Funds To Continue Operations And Save Jobs.

ST. LOUIS, July 6 (U.P). —Employvees of George Kilgen and Son, Inc., say they are preparing to post from $100 to $1000 each to keep the company from going out of business. A voluntary receivership suit has been filed here to dissolve the Kilgen company, which formerly was one of the world’s leading manufacturers of pipe organs. The St.

[Louis plant was started in 1870 by

Johann Charles Kilgen, German immigrant whose family had been ‘manufacturing pipe organs since

The company once maintained branch offices in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Oklahoma City and Cincinnati. Organs built by Kilgen were set up in many of the leading churches of America. There is a Kilgen organ in St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. Oarnegie Hall's great pipe organ was built at the Kilgen plant and traasferred in a dozen box cars to New York City. Veteran workers have started a Kilgen Employees Welfare Qrganization to collect contributions to buy stock in a new concern. Many of them have worked for the ~ompany for 35 years, and nearly all for at least 10. Charles C. Kilgen Jr. has been asked to head the new company. if employees are successful in forming it. He says there would be attempts to interest outside investment. Val A. Schneider, member of a trustee committee formed by the employees, said the collection of the fund is for the protection of the jobs of veteran workers. “All who contribute will be stockholders in the new company,” he said. “We know nothing else but this business and feel by taking this step he can save our jobs.
