Restoration of Dollar Power to F. D. R.

NEW YORK, July 6 (U. P)— Stocks continued their dull advance for the fifth consecutive session today. The averages registered minor, gains with the exception of the] utility which was about unchanged | ¢

from the previous close. Transactions continued restricted. Wall Street was disappointed over | the restoration of President Roosevelt's dollar devaluation powers and | the vote to resume purchases of foreign silver. However, most of the low. This company operates in silver shares moved higher. An ex-| ception, U. S. Smelting, made a new | Mexico and there was talk the sil- | ver purchases from Mexico might | be curtailed.

Continued Heavy Receipts 3 Blamed for Decline; Vealers Rise. Continued heavy receipts at Indianapolis today forced hog prices |

25 cents lower, according to the Agricultural Marketing Service. The

top price on 210 to 220-pounders

slid to $7.30.

Today's sharp price break fol-|

lowed a decline of five to 8) cents in heavy hog quotations yesterday. Vealers rose 30 cents to establish a peak price of $10.50, while spring lambs held steady with a top of $10.50.

French Econ

Revealed for First Time

PARIS, July 6 (U. P).—Paul Reynaud, Minister of Finance, today disclosed for the first time the extent of the success of the Government’s program for financial and economic improvement. In a statement to the Anglo-American Press Association, the finance minister issued heretofore unpublished figures showing the progress the nation had made in its efforts to regain a sound economic posi-

tion because of the threats of the totalitarian states. He emphasized that the French comeback’ was attributal to the “French peoples’ grim determina-

a7. | tion” to shoulder the Government's

burdens and further its efforts.

M. Reynaud listed “seven facts” to show the progress of the nation’s program. They were: 1. Repatriation of French gold in June doubled the May total. 2. Despite the heavy commitments met in June, the Treasury's position today is stronger than at any time since the start of the year. 3. After 10 years of successive deficits averaging eight billion frances (212 million dollars) ordinary budgets were strictly balanced for the first six months of this year. 4, Today 33 per cent of France's workers are employed overtime

compared with only 3 per cent last |

November.

5. Unemployment has fallen 14,000 units compared with November when the total was 39,000 above the corresponding 1937 month.

6. The nation’s production index rose from 83 last October to 97 in May, the highest in eight years. 7. French exports in May were 32 per cent higher in value and 20 per cent greater in volume than in the 1938 month. M. Reynaud said these improvements were “no miracle” and that “France's developing power is due to the freely consented sacrifices of the French people who have finally realized the necessity for national

unity in the face of the dangers]

threatening the country.” 3
