CHURCH TO RAVE | MEMORIAL FOR RETIRED PASTOR

- The Rev. John &. McGavran, Missionary to India, Dies Here at 72.

A memorial service for the Rev. John Grafton McGavran, retired | missionary, pastor and teacher, will be held at 7 p. m. today at the Downey Avenue Christian Church. | Cremation will follow. The Rev. Mr. | McGavran, ‘who was 72, died yesterday at his home, 5718 Oak Ave.| He served many years in India and came here to live ih 1928 after his health was impaired by overwork. The Rev. Mr. McGavran was born | at New Cumberland, W. Va. and, spent his boyhood in Ohio. When | 24 he went to India intending to study medicine, but relinquished that plan for missionary work.

While at Damoh he helped start | boys’ work and during the famine | helped clear arrangements with the Government for relief. During the |, famine he continued construction of | buildings to give work to the natives | and save them from starvation.

When the family came to the! United States on furlough in 1911, educational needs of the children | were filled and the Rev. Mr. Mc-| Gavran took his master’s degree at the University of Michigan. He then became pastor of the First] Christian ‘Church at Tulsa, Okla. from where he was called to teach at the hew College of Missions here. | Mrs. McGavran alto was a member of the faculty. They returned fo and were stationed at Jubbulpore, where the Rev. Mr. McGavran served as manager of the Press, editor of the mission weekly Hindi paper and teacher ih the Bible College. He assumed the duties of missionary secretary and the work became too heavy. He suffered four paraIvtic strokes and returned to the United States. He was seriously ill for only & few weeks before his death. He §§ survived by his wife; two sons, Donald A. of Mungeli, India, | and Bdward G. of Hillsdale, Mich: two daughters, Grace W. of Indianapolis, and Mrs. E. B. Seelve of Worcester, Mass., and nine grandchildren.

JUNE COKE SALES HIGHEST SINCE '36

The Citizens Gas & Coke Utility announced todav that its domestic coke sales in Indianapolis during June were 83 per cent higher than for June, 1838. and were the highest for any month in the last 40 Total sales were 16.232 tons, compared to 9965 in June, 1838. The last time the June tonnage was exceeded was ih January and February, 1936, it was reported The increase was attributed largely to the price reduction granted during May and June by arrangement between the coal dealers and ‘the wtility. During the two months, coke prices here were cut to $7.85 cash, or $8.10 credit. The price was boosted 25 cents a ton last Saturday and further ihe creases are expected between how | and the firing season Sales in Mav totaled 11.332 tons. compared to 3850 in May, 1938.

Oscar J. Queisser, secretary and | sales representative of the Marion County Beverage Distributors, Inc. died yesterday pital. Mr. 2429 E. 38th St., was 63. He was a lifelong resident of Indianapolis. He was graduated from Manual High School and attended Butler University. He was at one time active in Republican politics and was associated with the Police Department 12 vears, serving in the Gamewell Division and inh a secretarial capacity. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Anna, Munch Queisser; two sons, Ralph O. and Arthur J.; a daughter, Mrs. Anng Zimmerman; two brothers, Walter A. and Arthur M.; a sister, Mrs. Alma Layton, and two grandchildren, all of Tndianapolis. Ex-Indianapolis Insurance Executive Is Victim of Heart Ailment.

Thomas R. Dungan, for 20 years in the insurance business in Thdianapolis as state manager of the Phoenix Fire Insurance Co. died early today in his Oak Park, Til, home. He was 51 and the death was

caused by heart disease. Mr. Diunhgan left here in 1938 to become manager of the brokerage department of the American Fore Fire Insurance Companies, Chicago. While he was here he served as
