CHICAGO, July 3 (U. P.).—Hedge selling, weak outside markets, and an increas ® nearly 12 million bushels in the visible supply depressed wheat prices on the Chicago Board of Trade today. At the close wheat was off 1% to 13% cents. July 68%. Corn was off 3% to % cent. July 46'2c, and oats were 2 to 1 cent lower. July

is |303%c asked.

Scattered liquidation of July fu-

i{*! tures added to the pressure, and

wheat lost more than a cent. The holiday tomorrow and the private crop estimates to be released Wednesday kept some traders on the sidelines. More favorable harvesting weather | over the week-end resulted in a big increase in new wheat receipts at Kansas City. Prices in that market were off about a cent. Minneapolis wheat slipped about 11, cents partly due to favorable

s | weather for spring wheat, and Win-

nipeg declined a cent. Export sales of only 150,000 bushels were reported. Liquidation of July contracts brought about a decline of 1 cent to 13; cents in the Liverpool wheat market. The Board of Trade reported an increase of 11,964,000 bushels of last week. A private estimate of a 709-mil-lion-bushel wheat crop had aj

: slightly bearish effect in the wheat

pit. Corn prices held fairly steady at

709-Million-Bushel Wheat

Crop Is Forecast

CHICAGO, July 3 (U. P) —C. E. Galvin, crop expert, today forecast

.la domestic wheat crop of 709 million

bushels, far below last year’s yield of 931 million bushels.

Mr. Galvin estimated winter wheat

: production at 521 million bushels

and spring wheat at 188 million bushels. Excellent yields of winter wheat in the Southwest were offset by additional abandoned acreage, the report said. In the Northwest spring wheat belt favorable rains improved prospects, but much early sown wheat was permanently damaged by drought. Mr. Galvin said the corn crop was “making excellent progress” and promised a yield of 2518,000,000 bushels compared with the 1938

1 2 crop of 2,542,000,000 bushels.

DULL PERIOD IN

STEEL VISIONED

Report Ingot Production at 51 Per Cent Capacity Chicago District.

CHICAGO, July 3 (U. P.) .—Steel ingot production climbed 1'2 points to 51 per cent of capacity in the Chicago district last week. Local steel circles predict a dull period in the immediate future, with mills marking time pending the release of new orders for automotive steel around the last of July. Farm equipment plants shut down at present are expected to reopen after the holiday. The steel scrap marke is quiet, with the principal local purchaser having a plentiful stock on hand. | The last mill sale of No. 1 heavy melting steel was at $13.50 per ton, and buyers are unable to purchase this grade under $13.25.

BUSINESS RESUMING RISE, REVIEW FINDS

NEW YORK, July 3 (U. P).— Reports from various industries indicate that business has resumed a definite upward course following the spring let-down, the National City Bank of New York said today in its monthly letter on general business conidtions. “Some observers had feared that the slackening in the early spring, which dropped the Federal Reserve index of industrial production from

98 for March to 92 for April and

May, marked a major turn downward, but the rebound is proof to the contrary,” the review stated. “According to preliminary figures, the production index for June will be back near the March level,” the bank added. The spring decline evidently was a matter of minor adjustments, complicated by the war menace, the coal strike, and unseasonable weather, and when those depressing influences lifted, business was in shape to regain the lost ground, the review found. “They (businessmen) recognize,” the review stated, “the difference between a rebound, after temporarily depressing factors are out of the way, and a cumulative upward tyTiovemner:, carried forward hy a ound business situation and a spirit aE: confidence and enterprise, and evidently they are not counting upon the latter until they see it more clearly.” Commenting on the President's proposal for a new program of Federal lending, the bank said it has not so far affected the markets or

TONIGHT

6:00—Al Pearce, WIRE. 6:00—Andre Kostelanetz, WFBM. 6:30—Margaret Speaks, WIRE. 7:00—Radio Theater, WFBM. 8:00—~Guy Lombardo, WFBM. 8:30—Blondie, WFBM.

Blondie and Dagwood moved many years before they achieved national prominence, if by national prominence we mean the movies and radio.

Blondie will start at 8:30 o'clock tonight, CBS-WFBM, for a regular half-hour spot. . . . Andre Kostelanetz plays his Monday broadcast for the last time tonight at 6 o'clock. He goes off the air until Aug. 21. The pieces de resistance are arrangements of ‘Yankee Doodle” and Johann Strauss’ “Perpetual Moion.” Mr. Kostelanetz will make a concert tour starting with a program in Robin Hood Dell at Philadelphia. ” ” ”

Tonight sees two swing bands come to the airwaves to make the jitterbugs cut their rugs around

the family radio . . . John Kirby has been playing sone months at the famous Onyx Club, long hailed as the birthplace of modern swing. You probably won’t be able to hear the band for the next two or three weeks. There has been some trouble finding the proper time and outlet. He'll be on CBS from a New York outlet at 4:30 p. m. today and next Monday. Then he has a Chi-

ON THE RADIO

to New York there's talk of him taking over a larger program. . . . Larry Clinton takes a permanent spot at 8:30 o'clock tonight, NBCWIRE, with his Musical Sensations. The program will have the usual successful program “twist. 9 This time it's dramatized “news sensation of the week.”

” ” 2 Al Pearce and His Gang continue with their 6 o'clock, NBC-WIRE program. This brings to mind the quip Arlene Harris, headliner on the show, made the other day.

Said she: “Imagine! It's 15 years since I've seen Katie, and we used to be such good friends. Yes, 15 years ago we were both 18, and now she’s 33 and I'm 25. How time does separate friends!” ” ” ”

The tentative outline of the new program rules to be submitted to the National Association of Broadcasters’ convention early this month is almost exactly the code now en=forced on the airlanes. One of the principal changes is the restriction of time alloted for advertising. Sponsors of the Louis-Galento fight broadcast take note. Richard Himber was through with band leading, principally, he said recently, because there wasn’t enough money in it to pay for the worry. Now comes the news he’s signed a new seven-year contract, sponsor not listed. How's that again, Mr, Himber? Beatrice Lillie will go on a new comedy show come fall. A New York agency is talking big figures with more than one tenta-

cago engagement. When he returns ” ” 8
