Trip to Europe Gives Track Stars Added Incentive in A.A. U. Show, to Be Staged July 3 and 4 at Lincoln, Neb.
Old Standbys Likely to Put Collegians in Back Seats In Many Events.
By JERRY BRONDFIELD
LINCOLN, Neb, June 30 (NEA) — They'll be running, throwing and jumping for more than first places and bits of medalware at the National A. A. U. track and field championships here July 3-4. From the ranks of the winners will be picked the squad to represent the A. A. U. on a tour of Europe this summer. In many events, crack collegians will take a back seat as the cream of the nation’s amateur talent go into action.
Looks Like Fenske
In the 1500-meters—the metric mile—Lou Zamperini of Southern Cal is the only college man given even a fair chance of finishing in front. Favored in the feature event is Chuck Fenske, who more than ever is locked upon as the successor to Glenn Cunningham as the world’s greatest miler. Running also, will be such familiar names as Cunningham, Archie Sam Romani and Blaine Rideout. Clyde Jeffrey of Stanford and Mozelle Ellerbe of Tuskegee, who ran a photo finish in the national collegiate 100, will face more serious problems in Ben Johnson, defending champion, and Perrin Walker, the lanky Georgian. Jeffrey, however, rates a big edge in the 200. Prep Star Is Threat
Most brilliant field of the meet should be found in the 400 meters, where collegians Erwin Miller and Howard Upton of Southern California; Don Watts of California and Warren Breidenbach of Michigan will have to contend with Ray Mallot, former Stanford star who now competes for the Olympic Club. In addition there will be Johnny Quiglev, the amazing

likely the lanky Negro will follow anyone across the line. Greg Rice, Notre Dame star, and Tommy Deckard, formerly of Indiana, will put on a two-man show at 5000 meters with anyone else running for the exercise and third place. Fred Wolcott, cotton-topped tim-ber-topper from Rice, is highly favored to sweep both hurdle events again, but the presence of Allan Tolmich, former Wayne College star, will make the task more difficult
