V.F.W. TO FIGHT

DISCRIMINATION ON BASIS OF AGE

New Commander Terms It Un-American and | Un-Christian.

| |

Opposition to the “policy of dis-| eriminating against the man over) 40” will be part of the program of! the Indiana Department of the Vet-| erans of Foreign Wars, according to| Merville Ray of Evansville, newly! elected commander. | “The veteran must go squarely on record in a very positive way against the un-Christian and un-American practice of discriminating against) the man over the age of 40,” Mr.| Ray said. {

Asks Positive Stand |

“It is just as much un-American| and un-Christian to discriminate] against men over 40 as it is for Hit-| ler to discriminate against the Jews or Stalin to discriminate against religion. We must, by positive legislation where necessary and by pubiic appeal where this is not available, take a stand against this prac-| tice. “These insurance companies that discriminate against a man over 40 because he is an increased insurance hazard must be stopped by proper laws or put out of business. If they won't stop it voluntarily they will soon see a rise in public wrath that will repeal the very laws that gave them life. Others must be shown that it is bad economics to] discharge or refuse to hire a man because he is over 40.

“That's Bad Economics”

“It would do no good to cripple even an enemy if you know you have to pay his doctor bills and feed him the rest of his life. That is bad economics. But if you do discharge a man or refuse to hire him because he is over the age of 40, that is just what vou are going to do. If vou give the elderly man a job, he does not want 2 pension. If vou don't give him a job, you are going to give him a pension. A blind man living in Indianapolis last week could have seen this.”

RAILROAD LOSES IN DAMAGE SUIT PLEA

The six-vear-old of Miss Ruth Thompsen of Winchester, to collect $8000 damages from the New York Central Railroad had been won today in the Indiana Supreme Court. Damages awarded by a Hancock Circuit Court more than five years ago for injuries received by Miss Thompson when she was struck by a New York Central train in Winchester, were affirmed. The railroad attorneys had appealed the case on the ground that the jury verdict was based upon insufficient evidence.

SNEAK UNNECESSARY AT FRIDAY'S CIRCUS

Small bovs accustomed to sneaking into circuses will be a little disappointed if they attend the Indiana Bovs Town three-ring circus Friday night at the State Fair Grounds. ! The reason is that there is no

| point in sneaking in, since the cir-

cus will have no admission charge and no ticket takers. More than 40 acts are scheduled, seven of them featuring professional circus entertainers who have donated their services. A downtown circus parade will be held Friday morning, with 12 miniature circus wagons as a fea- | ture. The circus, to be staged in the Manufacturers’ Building, is being given by Indiana Bays’ Town under sponsorship of the Marion County WPA recreation division, the Northeast Community Center and the Park Board.
