TUBERCULOSIS HOSPITAL NEED GREAT IN SOUTH
U. S. Health Director Gives Data on Equipment At Convention.
By Science Service BOSTON, June 28 —The need for better tuberculosis hospitals and sanatoria is greatest in the South, Dr. Joseph W. Mountin of the U. S. Public Health Service told members
of the National Tuberculosis Asso-!
ciation here this afternoon. “Though there is undoubtedly
need for improvement in each area, the Southern States mark the line for first attack,” he said. “Need for hospital facilities,” he pointed out, “it is agreed, is probably most adequately expressed not by total poulation but by prevalence of tuberculosis as indicated by death rates for the disease.”
Beds Are Lecking
He and his associates in the Federal health service, Elliott H. Pennell and Kay Pearson, reported that the South, with its high mortality rate, provides only two-thirds of a bed for each tuberculosis death occurring there. At the same time Western States with only slightly greater death rate afford almost two beds a death. The Northeastern and Central regions, lowest in proportionate number of deaths, have available 1.7 and 15 beds, respectively. Operating costs also ran lowest in the South of any section, the Federal health service scientists found. This may be dus wholly to economic circumstances, they stated, but it is more likely, they suggested, that completeness of equipment and quality of service exert considerable influence.

the last 40 years than in all the |
time that has gone before,” he said. | “Recognizing that there are other factors in addition t sanatorium! treatment, the death rate is approximately one-fifth of what it was 40 years ago.

DELAY URGED ON; COMBINE OWNER
Wheat Must Be ‘Dead Ripe’ For Week, Expert at Purdue Warns.
Times Special LAFAYETTE, Ind, June 28. — With the Indiana wheat harvest already under way, George Enfield, Purdue University Extension agronomist, warned that wheat is not ready to be combined until nearly a week after it becomes dead ripe. He issued the warning because many Hoosier farmers will harvest their grain for the first time this year with a combine. Mr. Enfield said the difference in the time of harvesting wheat often means whether the grain can be
Wheat ct too early with a combine contains too much moisture and is likely to spoil when stored, he declared. “Highest yields of wheat, when cut with a binder, are obtained if the crop is cut from 10 to 1% days before it is safe with a combine,” he explained. “Wheat cut with a pinder should be harvested when the grain shows 40 per cent of moisture or less. “Dead ripe stage is when th? grain moisture is 20 per cent or
the ‘hard’ stage, not dry but firm.
“Wheat can not be combined safely until it gets down te 15 per cent moisture or less and preferably 14 per cent, if it is to be saved for seed. Much of the combined wheat reached the elevators in such poor condition last year that in some ‘cases farmers were ‘docked’ five cents a bushel due to the excess moisture This can be prevented by delaying the wheat harvest, when combined, at least one week after the crop is ‘dead ripe.’ ”

Buckner Jr. denied on cross examination today that he had paid the expenses to Washington of the showgirl lobby the Govermment contends he used to further his alleged manipulation of Philippine railway bonds. The youthful broker, on trial charged with mail fraud and conspiracy, asserted that one of his associates had financed the journey of Doris (Pee Wee) Donaldson and that he did not know who had paid for the trip of Miss Noel Carter, both of the night club choruses. He named William J. Gillespie, a codefendant, as the angel of Miss Donaldson's trip.
