LOEW'S |

The outstanding picture of 1939, as far as I am concerned, is “Goodbye, Mr. Chips,” and to me there is no question but that it will get the Academy Award. hose are strong words so early in the season but there wasn't anyone who didnt do right by the production from R. C. Sherrifi. who wrote the screenplay from James Hilton's book. to the waitress who served Robert Donat his lunch on focation.

There has been a great deal of hallyhoe “, step up the box office fen _ on this picture. The story is almost a household legend in English speaking countries. It has been hackneyed and discussed to near oblivion. Through it all the clear simple story of a man who had one romance in his life shines through in the movie production. Mr. Chipping is a young man who comes to Brookfield School for his first teaching assignment. Because of series of misundeistandings a few short years he threatens i wh rapidly into a cross old age. He takes a walking trip with a German teaching friend and meets’ Kathie, 2 beautiful English girl,—on top of a mountain in a heavy and | somewhat dangerous mist. To the heretofore unromantic Chipping comes a realization that there are other things in this life except gerundives and the marauding Caesars. Being unused to such affairs cf the heart, Chipping almost 2liows Kathie to slip out of his life. Begins then a wild, unreasoning tugging at his heart that he is unable to diagnose. His friend says it's love { Chipping finally thinks so, and he is married. Kathie over the position of schoolmuaster's wife with aplomb worthy of a quesn. There follows a new period in Chipping's life. Kathie calls him Chips” so he becomes Chips to his colleagues. Kathie feels there shiovid be entertainment and life ana teas and cakes. So there are. Kathie dies in childbirth. The loss felt greater by others in the school than bv Mr. Chips, who knowz he will alwavs have a part of her and knows the great debt he owes her, The years that follow find him molding the lives of his boys and being known as an institution, the beloved “Mr. Chips,” wis serves tea to the boys at any time of the cay or night, who goes out without his scarf, and who tells very good Jokes while the Germans bomb the school. Mr. Donat knows his histrionies and has never been anything but competent, What none of us ever knew was that there was a dream like Greer Garson who plays Kathie, in this world. She is all the best! girls you ever had wrapped into one —Tthe perfect example of the abject of eternal search—sweetness and light. Truth was the essence of James Hiltons book. There was never an attempt to veneer the straightforward job of reporting a man's life story The best example of the picture's sincenty is the scene in which Chips’ wife dies. Taken to the Mounties’ fort, she makes a place for herself and all would be well except that the Inector falls in love with the superintendents daughter. It'll be called the Pylon and it isn’t hard to figure the name's genesis. Theater names are funny things. During the time that everything was booming and you couldn't build a theater without thinking of the Taj Mahal first, names had to be opulent and flowery. Every once in a while a theater is named after a man who is in the public eye. Remember the Lindys that came and are gone? There'll probably be other theaters built in the next year that will take their names from some attraction of one of the fairs. ® 2 » HE 16th annual dance review of the Kersting Studio will be given Tuesday night at the FounJoe Kersting wil be master of ceremonies.
