JACKSON, Miss, June 23 (U. P). —The greenest oasis in Mississippi's “Bible Belt.” the so-called “Gold Coast” across the Pearl River from the statehouse, was moral and empty today after an invasion by 150 National Guardsmen, Troops, brandishing machine] guns, rifles, bayonets and shining! new axes, had swooped down upon] the 14-mile district of outlawed! revelry about dusk yesterday. | Today, in the path of destruction, more than 1000 cases of liquor lay | in broken heaps—some of it the! valuable store-bought variety that sold for 25 cents a shot. In dump’ heaps were the gaudy trappings of | 31 night clubs. The remnants of bars lay in piles fit only for kindling. | The “Ace of Spades,” the “Old! Moon River Club” and a score of other resorts looked like a tornado | had passed by. Slot Machines Seized

The damage was not established officially, but $100,000 worth of slot machines and gaming tables aad been carted away by the law. It all happened about the same time that the Legislature was tightening the penalties on store-bought whisky and making slot machine ownership a felony. The militiamen came in 30 automobiles and presented dozens of “Gold Coast” operators with search warrants.
