~~ ONE DEAD, 7 HURT IN FT, WAYNE CRASHES,
FT. WAYNE, Ind, June 23 (U. P). ~The toll from three automobile accidents here last night today stood at one dead and seven injured. Mrs. Stella Hoffer died from injuries received when a car driven by her husband, Louis, struck a utility pole after colliding with a truck. She was 46. Mr. Hoffer escaped injury. Stella Skinner, 48, 8 passenger, suffered shock. H. W. Rieke, 52, of Auburn, received head injuries when his machine struck a parked automobile. He was arrested later at the hospital and charged with drunken driving, police said. Five persons were injured, none seriously, when two cars collided head-on at an intersection earlier in the evening.
HIGH MORTALITY LAID TO ‘BABY MAULERS’
MONTREAL, June 23 (U. P).— “Baby maulers” among friends and relatives are partly responsible for Canada’s high infant mortality rate, according to Dr. C. K. Rowan-Legg of Ottawa. Addressing the Canadian Medical Association in its 70th annual convention yesterday, Dr. Rowan-Legg said that 34 of every 1000 children born in Canada die before they are a month old from causes “we must consider as preventable.” He listed as other reasons for infant mortality the increased age of women bearing children for the first time, and infection from other children.
‘HEAT DEATH’ GUARDS MAY BE REINSTATED
PHILADELPHIA, June 23 (U. P). —A jury’s recommendation of reinstatement with full back pay for six guards acquitted in the “heat deaths” of four hunger-striking convicts at Philadelphia County prison, was under consideration today by the board of prison inspectors. The jury deliberated only 50 minutes before acquitting the guards of involuntary manslaughter charges in the final trial growing out of the deaths last August in the prison’s radiator-lined “Klondike” punishment cellblock.
TRANSFUSIONS GIVEN TO WOUNDED YOUTH
A 17-year-old high school boy who was shot yesterday by a merchant policeman when found in a closed building, remained in a critfecal condition today at City Hospital. given two blood tranfusions and that a third might be necessary before tonight. He is under arrest on a vagrancy charge. Horace Whitaker, the policeman, the office of Highway Parts, Inc, 11253 E. Georgia St, and that he fled when he ordered him to halt.

WASHINGTON, June 23.-—A contract for 45 one-half ton trucks costing $51,120.92 has been award-
ed by the United States Army Quartermaster Corps to MarmonHerrington Co., Inc, Indianapolis, the War Department announced today. The Chemical Warfare Service awarded an $8680 contract to Hall Optical Co., Indianapolis, for glass lens.
