Michigan Man “Dead "in 1934 Has 85th Birthday

COLDWATER, Mich, June 23 (U. P.) —Like a stalk of ripened grain missed by the mower, Willard Hyatt has seen death take all his kin, and has waited hopefully for it for the past five years, but he still lives.

Mr. Hyatt’s celebration of his 85th birthday today in Burlington, Mich., near here, probably will be a repetition of the fantastic chore he has

performed daily since he turned 80,

the year he chose to die.

Leaving his ramshackle little

house where he lives with his fifth. wife, Mr. Hyatt will go to a grass-

grown cemetery where his own tombstone rests in useless splendor. He ordered it from a dealer in Marshall in 1919 and had it engraved “Willard Hyatt, 1854-1934.” He was 80 in 1934. “My pa died at 80, and so did ma,” he explained. “And I had it figured that’s when I was meant to die. Looks now as though they made a mistake: or overlooked me.” During the years Mr. Hyatt has awaited death he has spent hours every day in the burial plot just

outside .the village. He trims the].
