END OF CLIPPER TRIP DESCRIBED BY EX-HOOSIER
Press Passengers in Paris After Eating Lunch in The Clouds.
¢ This is the second in a serias of three dispatches egbled by Jean Geaffis (former Kokomo, Bloomington and New Castle, Ind. newspaperman) aboard the Atlantic Clipper on its preview passenger flight to Europe.
By JEAN GRAFFIS PARIS, June 21 (NEA)-—-We passengers of the Atlantic Clipper’s press flight were seeing Paris to-
day and the “trans-Atlantic air ferry had become a fact. It was at Lisbon that the old dream of an overnight skyway trip to Europe ceased to be a dream and became reality. In less than 24 hours, between dinners, we spanned the breach which had alienated two worlds for centuries. The trip from the epochal in many ways. The day's diverting ride started very early for me. Being an American ship, the Clipper served an American breakfast— but we had to eat it in sections. At the height we were flying, coffee takes a long time to make, so we started on orange juice, and bread and jam, went to cereal, moved up on the sausages and bacon. After a while the coffee came along and we drank it eagerly. We wers pretty hungry. Comforts of Home—in Sky
Before breakfast some of us shaved in the men’s lounge, and here the Clipper gave us three pleasant surprises. First, the water was really hot. Second, one could shave without encountering the usual Pullman train lurch that can leave you with half a cheek scraved off. Third, as you shaved, you could look out and see sunshafted clouds a mile below. After breakfast I sat by a window, occasionally interrupting my reveries to listen to the crew's factual reports on position and speed. The impressions of veterans of air-travel agreed with my amateur’s exultation over the trip.
“Land Ho "—Portugal
Members of the crew told incredible tales of air travel through the greater part of the world. Some would be seeing friends in China or South America on their next trip. After lunch, my lack of sleep, the overstimulation of the trip and the ceaseless drone of the motors forced me to slip into my berth where I lay between silk sheets. On the clipper you lie in a berth with your feet “facing” the aisle. The motors were near but their smooth rhythm put me to sleep for three hours. When I awakened I was lost, unable to identify the time or place until I heard the cry of “Land ho!” I dressed quickly and caught my first glimple of the cliffs of Portugal jutting darkly under fleecy clouds, of and freighters trailing wispy smoketails near the shore.
Too Far for Fright
As we steered up the Tagus River the mistral bucked and wobbled the slowing Clipper. But I had come too far to be frightened. Touching the rough waters we bounced twice, then settled safely and idled up the Tagus. As we entered the customs after landing, I turned and looked back at the gigantic air chariot silent at her mooring. I couldn't come down to earth. I had just been given a place at Columbus’ feet.
HELD PRISONER BY MATE, WOMAN SAYS
PLYMOUTH, Ind, June 21 (U. P.) —Marshall County authorities today probed the stories of Mrs. Thomas Sensibaugh and her 13-vear-old stepdaughter that Sensibaugh, the husband and father, held them prisoner for several hours yesterday and threatened them with death. Sensibaugh was held in the county jail on an assault charge resulting from charges brought by his wife and stepdaughter. Police found two loaded guns in the Sensibaugh home and said that there was a bullet hole in the kitchen ceiling. Mrs. Sensibaugh told them that a shot was fired in the kitchen when she struggled with Sensibaugh for possession of a gun.
JOBLESS AID DENIED | COLLEGE STUDENT
WABASH, Ind, June 21 (U. P) — A college student cannot be unemployed and hence is not entitled to unemployment compensation, according to a ruling by Judge B. C. Kennedy here. He ruled against William T. Russell of Wabash in a petition against the ruling of the Board of Review of the State Unemployment Compensation Division. Judge Kennedy said that Russell would "not be available for another job which might be offered him” and was thus not entitled to compensation.

Fourth of Nation's Voters Believe They Pay No Taxes, Survey Finds
By DR. GEORGE GALLUP American Institute of Public Opinion
EW YORK, June 21.—The campaign of taxpayers’ associations and
i
consumer groups to make the public conscious of taxes still has considerable distance to cover in achieving its goal,
judging by the
results of a national study on the tax consciousness of American voters. The survey, conducted by the American Institute of Public Opinion,
questioned a cross-section of the voting population in all walks of life, asking each individual whether he or she paid any taxes of any kind. Although virtually everyone in the nation actually pays taxes in some form either direct or indirect, nevertheless the survery found that one quarter of the adult voters do not think they are taxpayers. The actual vote is:
Do you happen to pay any taxes?
The relatively high “no” vote in the lower income level is undoubtedly caused by the fact that few of these voters have to pay direct taxes, such as the Federal income tax or levies on property and real estate. Most of the taxes they pay are “hidden taxes'—a form of levy which Treasury Secretary Morgenthau thinks Congress should take steps to eliminate in favor of more direct taxation. = 2 HE study found that, in general, Democrats are less conscious of taxes than Republicans and that persons living in small towns are more conscious of individual tax bills than persons living in cities or on farms.
An interesting contrast is also shown in the political attitude of persons who say they are taxpayers and those who say they are not. Voters who look upon themselves as taxpayers are for President Roosevelt by a small majority, whereas those who say they pay no taxes aprove overwhelmingly of him as President today. Approve of Roosevelt Disapprove Those Who Say They Taxes Those Who Say They Pay No
Most of the persons who are not conscious of paying any taxes are in the lower income level—the group earning less than $20 a week. Yet recent studies show that persons earning $20 a week actually pay taxes of more than $100 a year. The fact that a quarter of the
nation’s voters think they pay no taxes may help to explain the enthusiasm for Government spending which many Institute studies have found in the lower income levels. There is apparently little connection in the minds of these voters, between the cost of government, both local and Federal, and their pocketbooks. Do you happen to pay any taxes? Yes No Upper Income Voters..93% 79% Middle Income Voters.81 19 Lower Income Voters..60 40

LOAN SET FOR | COUNTY WHEAT
Farmers Within Allotment to Get 71 Cents a Bushel On 1939 Crop.
The Federal Government will loan Marion County farmers 71 cents a bushel on the 1939 wheat crop, it was announced today. Albert L. Steinmeier, chairman of the Marion County Agricultural Adjustment Administration committee, said the loans will be offered only to those who have kept within their wheat acreage allotment on the 1939 agricultural conservation program. “In order to qualify for a loan,” Mr. Steinmeier said, “Indiana wheat must be in storage at least 30 days, and Grade 3 or better. Loans will be graded at a lower rate on wheat

only. The moisture content of the stored grain must not exceed 14 per cent.” Mr. Steinmeier urged careful inspection of granaries and bins so that farmers’ storage will meet requirements of the Commodity Credit Corp., which makes the loans on stored wheat. The loan rate varies from 69 cents a bushel to 74 cents in various Indiana counties.

Professor Tells About Boy Who Lived With Baboons.
ONDON, June 21 (U. P).— The existence of a real-life “Tarzan” was described today by Prof. R. Ruggles Gates of King’s College University, London. Prof. Gates published a report from a colleague in South Africa, describing how a native boy of about 12 was found with a tribe of baboons. He could make only guttural sounds when found, but was tought English and the Afrikaans dialect, the report said. Subsequently he was said to have told of his experiences, relating that his food was mainly crickets, ostrich eggs, prickly pears and wild honey. He went on to relate that two policemen captured him and took him to civilization.

LAST-MINUTE COUNT OF JOBLESS SLATED
WASHINGTON, June 21 (U. P)). —-— The WPA and other Federal agencies are preparing for a systematic “up to the minute” check on the number of unemployed. WPA Administrator F. C. Harrington has discussed tentative outlines of the plan with officials of the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and other agencies. Under it, the agencies would present a co-ordinated monthly estimate of state-by-state unemployment and the economic outlook. It marks the first Federal effort to count the unemployed since the jobless census undertaken by John D. Biggers, Toledo, O., industrialist, placed the number between 7,722,912 and 10,870,000 as of November, 1837.
