HEAVY RECEIPTS

BRING GENT SLIP IN WHEAT PRIGE

Rates Are Lowest in About Two Months in Chicago Pit.

CHICAGO, June 9 (U. P)) —Heavy receipts of new crop wheat in the Southwest and bearish outside markets depressed wheat prices on the Chicago Board of Trade today. At the close wheat was off 3 cent to 1% cents, July 70% cents, corn was off 4 to 1% cent, July 493% cents and oats were !% cent lower, July 333% cents. Steady liquidation of wheat futures carried prices to the lowest

s; [levels in nearly two months, be-

fore a little short cqgering steadied the market. Private reports from the Southwest said that high temperatures were causing damage to wheat in Nebraska, but most crop news was favorable. Weather was fairly cool in the spring wheat area, with scattered siowers reported overnight. Heavy rains were received in the Canadian

: spring wheat belt.

Arrivals of new wheat at Southwestern terminals were heavy, with nearly 1000 cars reported at both and Wichita, Xan. Minneapolis and Kansas City wheat markets were off as much as a cent. While Winnipeg ruled easier on favorable Canadian rains. Export business in North Ameri-

BUSINESS BRIEFS

Times Special NEW YORK, June 19—With présent capacity ranging between 250,000 and 350,000 cars, according to whose figures one takes, the freight car builders are still suffering from over-capacity, the Standard Statistics Co. said today.

Electrical appliances show substantial gains in May over 1938, with refrigerators up 55 per cent, according to reports to Electrical World from the field. While business in some sections is spotty, favorable sales reports predominate for many lines. Prospects for a business upturn in the fall are bright, a survey of manufacturers reveals.

Textile production during the first five months of the current year was nearly 50 per cent greater than that for the corresponding period of last year according to Textile World's index of mill activity. The 1939 index was 41 per cent above the 1938 figure, and 14 = cent higher than the first five months of an assumed ‘“normal”

year. Activity in the wool branch of the industry made the greatest percentage gain, rayon next, cotton next, and silk least of all.

Times Special NEW YORK, June 19.-— Sales of Diesel engines so far this year have shown a very sharp increase, a survey by La Rue Applegate showed today. In the first quarter sales totaled 650,000 horsepower, a jump of 75 per cent as compared with roughly 375,000 horsepower in the corresponding months of last year. Trade reports indicate that April and May volume was equally good, with sales of some companies more than double the corresponding months of last year.

PITTSBURGH, June 19 (U. P). —A technical glass for the auto industry will be established at Detroit by the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co.. president H. S. Wherrett announced today. The advisory office will be under the direction of J. Hervey Sherts, who, as former technical administrator for the company, has devoted much time to the development of safety glass that has come into general use on autos.

PUBLIC UTILITY TAX

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind, June 19 (U. P.).—An appeal testing the validity of a 1939 law excluding municipally-owned utilities from

ev. | State and county taxation will be lcarried to the Indiana Supreme

Court, Montgomery County officials said today. Constitutionality of the act was upheld in Circuit Court here by Judge Edgar A. Rice. Judge Rice issued a restraining order to prohibit Montgomery County Treasurer E. Grady Chadwick from collecting 1938 taxes on the city’s electric plant. The city had asked for the order. Mr. Chadwick was joined in the a taxpayer and official of the Farm Bureau Federation, and they both said the case would be appealed. Judge Rioe'’s ruling affects 304 municipally-owned utility plants in 238 cities and towns.

§ ——— Fred Waring, the long-time-no-seé man, comes back to the big city tonight with his arms and band full of gifts. Just by way of good old-fashioned plug, tonight he’s introducing ‘a tune by the radio editor of the New York Daily Mirror, Nick Kenny. Fred carries a staff of more than 70 instrumentalists and vocalists in addition to about 10 arrangers and other members of the production staff. The program airs week nights except. Wednesday and Saturday at 9 p. m, NBC-WIRE. 2 ” ” Certainly not very close on the heels of the comic feuds like those between Ben Bernie and Walter Winchell, and Jack Benny and Fred Allen, comes the news that a number of daytime announcers are going to cook up a few, just to keep up interest. All we've got to say is: It'd better be funny. Peter Grant, Roosevelt-voiced WLW newcaster, has a nice little battle going between himself and Rene Canizares, announcer at CMQ, Havana. Mr. Grant claimed a broadcasting speed of 2600 words a minute. A Cuban radio magazine said that was small stuff, since their Senor Canizares could go at a similar rate in Spanish. Because of the greater number of syllables, they asserted, the Cuban was in fact, faster. Now it remains with the linguists. Is there any basis to this claim? 2 ” = The Order of Adventurers meets again tonight at the revered chair of Marco Polo. This Marco Polo

Richard St. Barbe Baker of the British Army will be the honored guest at 6 o'clock, NBCBlue. He's the man who originated the idea for CCC camps. He also induced the primitive Giguyu tribesmen in Equatorial Africa to plant nine million trees as a soil conservation project.
