Retail Sales Rise in Week

NEW YORK, June 17 (U. P).— The expansion of retail trade activity was slowed by a number of seasonal influences this week, but wholesale distribution continued its forward movement, Dun & Bradstreet, Inc., said today in its weekly trade review. The trade authority reported that retail sales for the country as a whole were 7 to 14 per cent ahead of the corresponding 1938 week, but emphasized that volume was below Wholesale | markets, however, were bolstered by 'a substantial forward-buying move- , ment and registered the best gain lover last year’s totals in many weeks. “The signs of improvement in business conditions, which became noticeable in the latter part of May, were less in evidence this week,” Dun & Bradstreet said. “On the average, the trend was sidewise rather than downward, although seasonal factors were exerting an increased retarding effect on some divisions.” The review pointed out that all sections of the country recorded an improvement in retail activity as compared with last year, despite the contraction from last week's levels.

Ideal Harvesting Weather Prevails for Winter Grain Belt.

CHICAGO, June 17 (U. P).— Wheat prices again sagged on the Chicago Board of Trade today on liquidation induced by favorable crop conditions. / At the close wheat was off 1 cent to 1's cents, July Tl, corn was up ls to 4 cent, July 49%, and oats were unchanged to 1! cent higher, July 337 bid. The weather map showed hot weather in the Southwest and showers in the Northwest spring wheat belt, and the forecast was for continued ideal harvesting weather in the winter wheat belt, with cooler temperatures northwest. The beginning of a heavy movement of new wheat in the Southwest was reflected in a decline of a cent in the Kansas City market. Hedge selling was also a factor in the local wheat pit, and there was some liquidation by Northwest interests. Winnipeg held near previous closing levels, despite good rains in the provinces, and Liverpool wheat closed 1 cent higher to %% cent lower. Firmness in corn and oats featured trading in other grains. Local interests were good buyers of corn,

"GOOD MUSIC"

By James Thrasher Tomorrow morning after you get the second coat of paint on the garage and fix the glider’s squeak, all you have to do is draw up that easy chair and a day of good music stretches before you. As early as 10 a. m. Charles M. Courboin, Belgian-American organist playing from the New York Academy. of Arts and Letters, will be heard over Mutual. His selections include Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, Schubert’'s “Ave Maria,” Lemare's “The Bee,” Debussy’'s “Afternoon of a Faun,” and Widor’s Toccata from the Fifth Symphony. ” s »

WIRE will carry David W. Hughes, Elkhart supervisor music, at 1:30 p. m. on the Pick of the Air, a local program. Mr. Hughes has been directing the Jordan Conservatory of Music Band Clinic here this week. The clinic band will broadcast a special concert at 3 p. m, WFBM.

Howard Barlow airs the “Mother Goose” Suite, by Maurice Ravel, and the “Rustic Wedding” Symphony, by Karl Goldmark, on the CBS Symphony Orchestra program, 1 p. m, WFBM. The Mother Goose is based on the French nursery rhymes written in 1697, Mr. Goldmark’s symphony consists of four contrasting sketches, a lively march, a serenade, a scene in a moonlit garden, and a gay, almost tzigane, dance. Frank Gallup will give the program notes. » 2 =

to take a walk. If everything goes well you can have some iced tea and a biscuit or two with the Musical Playhouse at 5:20 p. m., CBS~ WFBM. Erno Rapee was scheduled to bring an unpublished Victor Herbert score to the airways tonight, but it has been postponed for a subsequent program. You might like to hear a Vincent Youmans mediey, though, with “I Want to Be Happy,” ‘Hallelujah” and “Wildflower.” Mr. Rapee plays “Gypsy Airs,” by Pablo Sarasate, and Strauss’ “Wine, Women and Song.” ” ” 8

Erich Leinsdorf, young Metropolitan Opera conductor, makes his second of four appearances at the podium of the NBC Symphony Or chestra at 6 p. m. The orchestra will play Beethoven’s Second Symphony. Mr, Leinsdorf has also programmed Bizet’s L’Arlesienne” Suite, No. 1. Simply because Herr Leinsdorf got his start at Salzburg, it's interesting to note that Mary Ann Cul= mer, Indianapolis protege of Ferdinand Schaefer, has been engaged to conduct a symphony concert at the Kurhaus at Wiesbaden Sept 26. Miss Cullmer, it is reported, has achieved signal successes in Berlin both as conductor and violinist. ” 8 2

The lighter music brings us Edith Dick, who has been featured on CBS “Hit Parade.” She's in Sum mer Hour, at 7 p. m., WFBM, along with James Melton, tenor, Francia White, soprano, and Don Voorhees’ orchestra.
