SIGNALS EASE TRAFFIC CRUSH

‘Safe Yet Practical Speed’ City’s Aim in Co-ordinat-ing Downtown Lights. In case you haven't noticed it.

downtown traffic 1s moving faster than last summer.

The reasen is that four principal,

north-south thoroughfares have been synchronized from Ohio to Washington Sts., according to John J. McNellis, City signal Department superintendent. Surveys made by traffic patrolmen in co-operation with the signal depactment show that the synchronized stop-go signals on Delaware, Pennsylvania and Illinois Sts. and Capitol Ave. have speeded up traffic flow about two miles an hour. Mr. McNellis said. The signals are set for 12 miles an hour. This is faster, he said, than the average speed of traffic in the Chicago Loop district, which is eight miles an hour. With Washington St. signals ndjusted for 12 miles an hour irom Senate Ave. to Alabama St. traffic movement in the downtown area will be regulated at “safe yet practical” speeds when Michigan St. is fullv synchronized with Washington St. by fall, Mr. McNellis said. City Signal Department em-| plovees now are preparing to put in| new cables which will centralize | control of traffic lights in most of the downtown district at a control | box at Meridian and Washington Sts. When this is completed, traffic will be moving at a continuous 12-mile-an-hour speed through brincipal downtown streets, and should be satisfactory for Saturday and holiday traffic, as well as the weekday flow, Mr. MecNellis said.
