| | Nina Hayes Dutton Proves | | Ability in Piano Recital. | ————— Together they might | have ruled the world . . he the strong, she the am. bitious . . .. but destiny pitted them against each other in a fiery conflict that toppled a throne! =
Nina Hayes Dutton’s appearance | lat the World War Memorial audi- | | torium last evening marked the | third of three piano recitals which, in the past fortnight, closed our | music season with a graceful cadence, Mrs. Dutton, like Sara Miller | Hoffman and Catherine Bell, who | | | preceded her, is a teacher at the | EF | Bomar Cramer Studios. And like] | them she is an able, well prepared and eomscientious pianist. Together, | these three attractive young womlen set forth unquestionable proof |of their capabilities. | Perhaps the happiest quality [about Mrs. Dutton's playing is the | impression which she conveys of thoroughly ‘enjoying the music | which she plays. Not the way she | plays it, mind you, which is quite a | different thing. The listener senses | that she is pleasantly absorbed in | her program's music. Tonal Contrast Noted This quality, naturally, presup[poses an absence of technical wor|ries, Besides her digital resources, | last night's soloist displayed supple- | ness of phrase and a telling use of | dynamic contrast within a some[what limited range. There was tonal contrast also, as proved in Albeniz’ langorous “Evocation” and

For all its familiarity, this work still presents its interpreter {with plenty of problems not only in {the playing of notes, but in empha- | [sizing its many beauties above its [equally prevalent structural weak- | | nesses. | Mrs. Dutton gave an especially | good account of the lovely and] lengthy Larghd movement, sustain- | ling its lofty mood and spinning | | forth the soaring melodies with a | [manifest feeling for their loveliness. | A disappointingly small crowd | heard and applauded this excellent | | recital. «J. sphere and trylon these days, the sly dog Anyway, Mr, Dobb's telegram “GOODBYE MR CHIPS JUST BOOKED INTO LOEWS TO OPEN JUNE TWENTY THIRD STOP MR CHIPS WILL BE HERO OF PENNSYLVANIA ST.” You can see that Mr. Doob knows his Indianapolis geography. It may be, too, that he is a good prophet of public reaction. For Mr. Chips is a pretty lovable old gentleman That much was discovered last week when “Goodbye Mr. Chips” had its first Midwestern showing in Davton, O. The picture was made in England from James Hilton's best-selling little novel (or long short story) of the same title. That's the same Mr. Hilton who wrote the ivory tower opus, ‘“T.ost Horizon,” which wound up as a Frank Capra | epic. Mr. never went La, like the In fact,

The funny part of it is that Miss Garson, who is “discovered” in the coming film, came over from England in 1937 on the wings of a Metro contract, two sedentary
seasons. She had to

her. Someday a major studio is going to launch an innovation by looking up the people who cash its pay checks, ”
” ”
Miss Garson isn't the whole show, of course Not even the biggest part of it. For Robert Donat has things pretty much his own way as the schoolmaster. The handsome hero of “The Citadel” exhibits some of the most masterful makeup since Lon ‘Chaney's day in his progress from the new teacher of 20-odd years to the octogenarian Chips.
