In a message to playwrights submitting manuscripts to the company, the Abbey management wrote: “We do not desire propagandist plays, nor plays written mainly to serve some obvious moral purpose; for art seldom concerns itself with those interests or opinjons that can be defended by argument, but with the realities of emotion and character that become self evident when made vivid to t imagination.” “Juarez” fills the Abbey bill to perfection. It chooses an episode of history full of intrinsic dramatic possibilities. It probes beneath the surface of events to find logical motives for them. From opposite political and social ideals it develops the personal conflict wills between Juarez and Maximilian. The writing has imagnation and credibility and a stirring emotional power. The direction performance and production are such as to present an absorbing, stimulating, though t-provoking work And “Juarez” pomts a political moral. tco.
