MOVIES

T may be, what with the Speedway and the heat wave and all, that we have been siightly remiss about opening the West Coast mail these past few days. But now, with the next 500-mile race some 360 days away, it’s time to check up on our cultural progress. Well, it has been quite a week for premieres. Springfield, Ill, had the first public showing of “Young Mr. Lincoln” on Tuesday night, and the press gathered in Dayton, O. last night for a first Midwestern screening, of “Goodbye, Mr. Chips.” The life of a movie reviewer is becoming a series of sleeper jumps these aays. Now it appears that Los An- 4 geles may take its place alongside Dodge City, Kas, Omaha, Waukegan, Ill, Columbia City, Ind. and all the other towns in the film jamboree circuit Yes sir, it looks as if the California metropolis might get a “Hollywood premiere!” It came about in this manner, Some of the Warner Bros. researchers were poking around in old history books—probably just tapering off after. their “Dodge City” labors. And there, in ithe Loos Angeles archives, they discovered an epic right on their doorstep. So Warners is now planning an early-history film called “City of the Angels.” ” ” T 20th Century-Fox, they plucked Miss Brenda Joyce from her studies at the University of California at Los Angeles, gave her a part in “The Rains Came” and christened her “the typical American girl.” This is because she likes hamburgers and Artie Shaw's orchestra, never has seen Broadway, drives a second-hand car and gets eight hours of sleep every night. The title was bestowed upon her bv "10 of filmdom's top directors.” The fact that nine of these 10 do most of their work at 20th Cen-turv-Fox only goes to show you that esthetic appreciation, like charity, begins on the home lot. The real reason for bringing Miss Joyce into the discussion, however, is to pass along the last paragraph of the Fox publicity announcement of her recent honors. It would seem that there 1s a slight swing to the right in the glamour factories: “To keep her typically American, Darryl F. Zanuck, 20th Cen=-turyv-Fox production chief, has is=sued orders that Brenda must not be changed in any way . She will not be trained intensively. Zanuck fears that the usual course for developing actresses might

Director Pommer All Set To Give Million-Dollar Tip

destroy the refreshing qualities about her and crystallize her into the customary Hollywood mold.” So, if you have suspected that some of the Hollywood idols were neither typical nor refreshing, you have Mr. Zanuck on your side.

” ” ”

M-G-M seems to have hit a new high in the matter of inspired promotion. Having discovered a Tarzan Jr, they're now in search of a junior Leo. He must be a lion cub less than 8 months old who will roar in his childish treble at the beginning of the studio's short subjects!

ARNERS' contributes

press department this touching anecdote anent a nature-loving comedienne: “Marie Wilson 1s taking a taxi to work these days because finches are building a nest in the spare tire of her car and she doesn't want to disturb them.” From the same studio's Fish & Game department: “John Litel has goldfish that swim about madly when they hear swing music” “Gloria Dickson was the surprised recipient of a complete seafood dinner air-expressed to her by a Baltimore fan.” A palm for the week's prize non sequitur must go to Paramount for the following: “Buck Jones, hero of many a screen gun fight, who abandons his six-shooter for a straight role in Paramount's ‘Unmarried,’ should come by his fighting naturally, as he was born in Vincennes, Ind., site of the famous Ft. Vincennes, he said today.” And back to Warners, where the fun-loving publicists have credited their finch-loving star with a pun which you mayv read at your own risk: “Because her dentist's name is McPherson, Marie Wilson claims Scottish extraction.” Class dismissed.
