Mrs. Tony Gulotta and Mrs. Bob Swanson.
By ROSEMARY REDDING HERE is more than one driver in most of the cars running in today’s 500-mile race. Some people call them backseat drivers. But race drivers’ wives are more than backseat drivers. Some of them know more about mechanics than expert chauffeurs. But theirs is not a day of experting today. There are tens of thousands at the Speedway plant seeking thrills. As many more went for a chance spill. But the women whose husbands are driving those high-powered machines are praying and hoping that there will be not one single accident—not one single skid. The men risking their lives on the track are not just race drivers to them. They are husbands and fathers. Note that comely young woman in a box across from the pits. She is driving every mile, every turn, every straightaway. “Careful,” she pleads as Tony Gulotta heads into the south turn. She is one of many drivers’ wives who must stoically sit on the side lines today and pray and drive from that back seat. When Bob Swanson hits 129, perhaps in his subconscious mind he will recall that admonishment: “Not too fast, Bob, not too fast.”

Mr. and Mrs. O. T. Kreusser to Entertain at Buffet Supper; Mrs. Edgar Gorrell Feted At Luncheon by Mrs. William Morris.
By VIRGINIA MOORHEAD MANNON
As Indianapolis blossoms into the world’s greatest glamour spot for a day, society is playing host to a distinguished list of visitors attracted by the thrills at the Speedway’s brick oval. Mr. and Mrs. O. T. Kreusser, who will entertain 100 guests tonight at a buffet supper at their home on Cold Spring Road, have as their house guests for the race Armund E. Hunt, vice president of General Motors, and Mrs, Hunt of Detroit; Lieut. Benjamin Kelsey, cross country flyer, and Mrs. Kelsey of Wright Field, Dayton, O.; Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Schamehorn, Milford, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. Burdette Wright, Buffalo; Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Larson, Anderson; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas S. McCray, Dayton, and Capt. and Mrs. S. E. Johnson, also of Wright Field. With the visitors, Mr. and Mrs. Kreusser and their daughter, Carol, and son, Richard, attended the race. Another race party included the Misses Dorothy Johnston and Virginia Layman; Sir James Hunt-Holley of Johannesburg, South Africa; Henry Chapin and Frank Shaver of Chicago; John Elam, Thomas Noblitt and Caleb Denny. Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Veazey of San Antonio, Tex. are the race guests of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Veazey. Mr. and Mrs. Edward B. Raub’s guests are their daughter and son-in-law, Capt. and Mrs. Frank Irvin of Wright Field, Dayton, and their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Edward B. Raub Jr, of Lafayette. Mr. and Mrs. Raub Jr. attended the race with Mr. and Mrs. Newell C. Munson. John Pulling of Naples, Fla, who is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Kackley, was their guest at the Speedway. Louis Harpole of Evansville is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Walton M. Wheeler Jr.
Bobbitts Hosts at Track
Guests in Mr. and Mrs. Archie N. Bobbitt's box were Mr. and Mrs. Franklin S. Reynolds of Cambridge City and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Krull. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Schurmann will entertain at dinner this evening for Mr. and Mrs. Herbert R. Duckwall and their house guests, Mr. and Mrs. John M. Rodger of Winnetka, Ill. They occupied a box together at the Speedway Alex Chambers entertained at the race his nephew, Smiley N. Chambers Jr.; Thomas and William Wainwright, Mitchell McDermott and Henry Bennett. With Mr. and Mrs. Francis W. Dunn were their son, Edward, and Carl Lieber.
Mrs. William MacGregor Morris gave a luncheon at the Indianapolis Country Club yesterday for Mrs. Edgar S. Gorrell of Glencoe, Ill, formerly of Indianapolis, who is here for the race with Col. Gorrell. Mr. and Mrs. William Rooe Simpson's guests at the Speedway were George Nixon-Davis of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. John Sloane Kittle Jr, the Misses Ruth and Sue Simpson and David and Robert Simpson,

fenhauser, wife of the noted racing car craftsman. Among the guests was the wife of Harry Miller, dean of racing engine designers. The conversation? The topic that never grows old to them despite the pros and cons discussed for days during qualifications. Daily they have been assembling in the paddock across from the pits to keep
watch on their husbands at work, Mrs. Lou Meyer, wife of the Speedway’s only three-time winner, appears to be the “young dean” of them all. “Ask June, shell know,” they say when questioned on history, legend or mechanical problems in the racing world. Mrs. Mever probably is doing the kind of back seat driving today that her man likes. She sits back to watch intently as the “Flying Dutchman” sets his pace and holds it. Though she is not allowed in the pits she probably will be able to guess any mechanical difficulty arising. “I couldn't help it, could I, after 10 years?” she asked. She has driven the Bowes Seal Fast Special several times. Only this year she sent the car over a California dry lake bed at a speed of 120 miles an hour. The Meyer car has been kept mostly in town rather than at the track this year and needless to say, Mrs. Meyer has kept “an eye on it.”
June Brides-to-Be Are Busy With Parties and Showers; Betrothal of Seven Announced
With June, the traditional month of brides, just around the corner, young women of Indianapolis are busy with plans for approaching marriages and with showers and parties being given for them by friends. Parents of seven local young women have announced their engagements. Mr. and Mrs. James W. Updike, 1356 S. Sheffield Ave., have announced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Norma Updike, to Maynard Jarvis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herschel | Jarvis, Connersville. The wedding for Miss Boyd June 16 at her home, will be Saturday in the parsonage 5645 Winthrop Ave. of the West Morris Christian] Church.

Young Tony Gulotta is on hand to see his father race for the
