Northwestern Soph Shows Up Conference Veterans In First Round.

EVANSTON, Ill, May 30 (U. P). —Northwestern's hopes of landing both the Big Ten team and individual golf championships boomed today as a 19-year-old sophomore, number four man on the Wildcat squad, led the field bv three strokes | into the third round. Chase Fannon, newcomer to Conference competition, scored a pair of par 72's in the opening rounds at Kildeer Country Club yesterday, finishing well ahead of the favorites —Will Thomson of Iowa, John David of Purdue, and Northwestern’'s two time champion, Sid Richardson The three veterans, however, still rated strong chances of capturing the individual title. Richardson, who is out to tie the record of three straight crowns set by Johnny Fischer, formerly of Michigan, came | home with an 80-71—151. Two more| rounds near the 71 figure can give him his third championship Added to scores of Fannon and] Richardson were 152's by Chester Bland and ‘Frank Perpich, which gave Northwestern a commanding | lead for the team title now held by Minnesota. The Wildcats led with 599 strokes, Michigan was second with 615, Minnesota tied with Iowa at 631, Wisconsin had 632, Illinois] 636, Ohio State 637, Indiana 641, and Cliiryso 661
