Col. Roscoe Turner, a speed king of the airways, is the honorary] referee for tomorrow's 500-mile automobile race. This marks the second time that Col. Turner has been named to the race staff. He served as honorary | starter in 13934. He has been out to the track for the last few days reacquainting himself with some of the drivers. He appeared in the American Legion air show Saturday and yesterday. Vice president of the PorterfieldTurner Aircraft Corp., Kansas City, Col. Turner has established many air lane speed records both in transcontinental flights and over race courses. A perennial contestant in the National Air Races, he won the famous Bendix trophy in 1933 and was second in 1936 ast vear he won the Thompson and Ludlum trophies and was presented with the Cliff Henderson award as the outstanding American aviator. His latest world record is a mark of 283.113 miles an hour for a closed course, which he made recently in France. During the war Col. Turner enlisted in the U. S. Army ambulance service and transferred to the air corps. He was with the Third American Army at Coblenz, and in 1919 he received his honorable discharge as first lieutenant. His colonelcy was a brevet award from the Governor of Nevada in 1929. He also is a California colonel and a Mississippi colonel. He was a barnstorming flyer in 1919, has operated a commercial flying school and has done stunt flying for the movies.

FASTEST LAPS ARE JUST BEFORE SUNSET

During the weeks of practice be- Se fore the race, most of the fast laps Haier. Ral oh Mulford are made by the drivers just before —193]— sundown. Reason for this is that there usually is less wind at that time of day, and winds not only slow cars but make driving at speeds over 128 miles an ha dangerous.
