MANTON BRIBED IN RAZOR TRIAL, EX-FELON SAYS
U. S. Witness Declares He Collected $15,000 for Federal Judge.
NEW YORK, May 26 (U. P).— An exconvict's story of bribery and coercion was added today to evidence accumulating against Martin
T. Manton, resigned Senior Judge of the United States Circuit Court
CIRCLING THE CITY
of Appeals. As a Government witness at Man- | ton’s trial on charges of obstructing justice, Morris Renkoff said that] after he had been sentenced to three years in prison for receiving stolen bonds, and was at liberty while his case was before Manton’s court on appeal, he collected $15,000 from the late Archie M. Andrews, president of the Dictograph Co. to bribe Manton in an electric razor patent suit.
Corroborates Testimony
Later another witness corroborat-| ed Renkoff’s testimony. Frank Sil-| insky, described by Renkoff as a “baseball betting commissioner,” told| the jury that he was present when | Renkoff and William J. Fallon, Manton's alleged “big man, ar-| ranged a bribe on behalf of An-| drews, “Fallon says ‘I'll go down and see the judge and see what I can do’,”| Silinsky testified. “He told Renkoff to come back in a couple of hours. Fallon came back the same day, late in the afternoon, and told Renkoff, ‘The judge wants $50,000’ “I was present at a meeting when Renkoff brought up $10,000 to Fallon about a day or two afterward. Renkoff said, ‘Bill, the best I can get is $25.000 and here is $10,000." Fallon said, ‘Hurry up, hurry up, I've got to go and see the judge.”
Letter
Renkoff previously had testified that he also sent Manton $7500 as a | bribe for reversing his conviction] and that when Manton sent the money back to him, saying he was| not able to prevail upon the other members of the court in favor of a reversal, he threatened to expose the judge for taking the Andrews bribe Manton promised. he said, to write a letter asking a presidential pardon for him, and did write to the Attorney General's office in| Washington saying a review of the evidence convinced him of RenKoff's innocence |
Says He Collected $15,000
Mr. Andrews, Renkoff said, mentioned that his firm had been sued by the Shick Dry Shaver Co. over a patent and the case was coming | up in Appellate Court. Without explaining why he suspected Manton would be susceptible to a bribe, he said he collected $15,000 from Mr Andrews for the judge. and that Fallon collected another $10,000, all] of which went to get Mr. Andrews a favorable decision in he | Suit
