Thin Market Prevails and Issues Gain Rapidly On Small Sales. |
|
NEW YORK, May 20 (U, P)— Rallying tendencies were resumed in| stocks in the short session today,!
a point in quiet trading. With the ranks of the Street depleted by week-end absentees, thin markets prevailed for many issues and they moved up| easily on small buying orders. Bonds also were firm. Commodity markets were little changed. The foreign exchange market was quiet and little changed. News before the market leaned toward the constructive side. The
traders in
automobile industry furnished the j
most cheering news. Chrysler president K. T. Keller predicted that this year’s production would top 1938 by | some 40 per cent. Advices from various centers indicated that retail sales of new cars thus far this month were running 50 to 100 per cent ahead of a year ago.
Retail trade figures for merchan- |;
disers also were encouraging. The improved European political situation, prospects that steel operations will hold steady, or rise slightly next week, and a strengthened technical position for the market were other Tatctors eh behind the rise.

son, Kirsten Flagstad and John | Barbirolli will join forces in an all- | | Wagner program when they appear with the Detroit Symphony Orches- | tra tomorrow night. Mme, Flagstad usually confines her activities to the Metropolitan | Opera House, with occasional concert tours, and Mr. Barbirolli sticks {pretty close to Carnegie Hall and his New York Philharmonic-Sym-‘phony. But, about a month ago, the [famous pair, with others, got together and did an uncut concert | version of Act II of “Tristan and solde.” For tomorrow evening's broadcast, Mme. Flagstad will sing “Du bist der Lenz,” from “Die Walkure,” and the “Liebestod” from “Tris [tan.” She will be joined by Winifred Heidt, mezzo soprano, a chorus land the orchestra in the Spinning Chorus and Senta’s Ballad from “The Flying Dutchman.” Mr. Barbirolli will conduct the | Prelude to Act III of “Lohengrin” to open the concert The closing numbers will be the Prelude to Act | TIT of “Die Meistersinger” and, from the same opera. the March of the Mastersingers, Chorale and Finale, in which the chorus also will be | heard. | “ o |

to the Philharmonic-Symphony Society: “If the balance sheet of the society means anything, it indicates that the financial stability of the Philharmonic - Symphony Society for the future is going to be dependent on the receipts from ticket sales, radio broadcasting, radio memberships and phonograph rec~ ords.”
This is at odds with the frequent petulant assertion that symphony orchestras are run by and for a wealthy few. And it may surprise you further to know that radi> lis |teners contributed $28,000 to the New York Orchestra's sipport this past season. Yet they say that {something for nothing is never appreciated. » Musical America's “Mephisto” columnist suggested some time back that music's traditional Three Bs (Bach, Beethoven and Brahms) might have to make room for three more. He was referring to the three talented brothers, Brev, who joned. the NBC Symphony Orchestra last | fall.
They make up the bulk of the orchestra’s French horn section, and tomorrow Arthur, the eldest, will. have an opportunity to disp.ay his talents as soloist. He will be heard in the Mozart Horn C Concerto No.: 3, with Hans Steinberg conducting.
