MILLION dollars worth of diamonds and rouge, enough of the later to paint a town red, are consumed every year by the auto industry in perfecting latest models. The diamonds are used to drill and grind tough metal, while the rouge is utilized for polishing fine moving parts. One auto plant uses two and a half bars of soap and a gallon of liquid soap for every 10 cars. Another uses mohair from five Angora goats in the seats of every sedan.

To check measurements as close as 7-100,000th of an inch in manufacturing motors for modern autos, one man out of every nine in a motor plant is an inspector. In axle plants, where important gears are assembled, there is one inspector for every seven produc tion men.

To give modern autos streamlined, smooth-flowing body lines, sheets of cold steel are placed into huge presses that in an instant accomplish the result that repeated taps of a coppersmith’'s hammer obtain in shaping soft metal. Engineers first developed special alloys of steel and then designed presses capable of generating thousands of pounds of pressure.

Compromise May Settle Differences on Auto Rate

The National Bureau of Casualty and Surety Underwriters has agreed to compromise on its new schedule of automobile insurance rate reductions which threatened to start a ‘rate war,” George H. Newbauer, State Insurance Commissioner, announced today.

The State Commission rejected the proposed schedule of reductions filed by the National Bureau, Tuesday on the ground that “it would precipitate a rate war.’

The Bureau's schedule proposed to cut 20 per cent off the insurance rates for pleasure cars owned by city residents and 26 per cent off rural cars in addition to a 15 per cent annual rebate to car owners having no accidents.

Eighty per cent of the automobile insurance written in Indiana is sold by independent companies not cons nected with the National Bureau. Mr. Newbauer said the State Com« mission has proposed a flat 20 per cent reduction without rebates for all companies in the State. National Bureau officials indicated

they would be willing to seek an agreement on that basis.

“We will contact the independent companies on the compromise and if they are agreeable, the flat 20 per cent reductions may be approved,” Mr. Newbauer said.
