CIRCLE |

As theyre saying these days into the country’s microphones, “It ain't what you do, it’s the way hotcha do t.” Which, come to think of it, is an accurate is somewhat offhand way to describe Cecil B. DeMille's contributions to film entertainment, Mr. DeMille can take a handful of stock situations and, with his special kind of magic, produce elaborate entertainment such as, to get down to cases, the Circle's current “Union Pacific.” This, with “Stagecoach,” stands as the cream of the season's crop of pioneering pictures. It's an “epic” (really an epos, look it up and see if that isn't so) of a truly dramatic event, the spanning of the continent by rail. And naturally there are side excursions which include a triangular love affair, among other things. The story is not “Dodge City.” in that it concerns an ex-Civil War soldier who tries to enforce the two-gun law in the wide open spaces. His chief opponents are a gang of gamblers employed by the inevitable rich and sanctimonious character who hopes the Central Pacific will beat the Union to Ogden, Utah. One of the gamblers, Dick Allen, is an old army pal of the one-man| law, Jeff Butler. What's more, they | both fall in love with Molly Mona- | han, who serves out tea and mail to the tracklayers. This clash friendship with principle, and the contest: for Mollie's affection is carried on against an expansive and expensive background. It all has that old DeMille touch. There are Indian fights, train wrecks, gun duels, scenes of toil and mutiny, good clean fun and base skullduggery. And you know how the story comes out. Sure, the U, P. wins. The remarkable thing is that it! all hangs together, and two hours and a quarter pass quickly. Mr. DeMille knows how to tell a story on celluloid. He can paint upon a massive canvas or hold your interest taut within a small frame.| Whether vou are a Western fan or not, vou cannot help admiring the nice balance between the story itself and such time-honored action shots as the chase and the Indian battle Mr. DeMille almost makes you like the old saw about the U. S. Army arriving just as the last cartridge is gone, -and Jeff is about to shoot

| Judge Hardy's influence over his son

LOEW'S

Well, the Hardy's are back in this week, still as typically American and as heartily amusing as ever. Loew's has them for the sixth time in a piece called “The Hardys Ride High,” in which the homely and native virtues again triumph over obstacles. This time it is money which all but destroys the family’s moral fiber. It seems that Judge Hardy is the heir to a two-million fortune left by a wealthy Detroiter. The family flies from Carvel to the Michigan metropolis. There they encounter several disturbing elements, There's a young man, the legal heir, who
