KANSAS CITY, Mo, May 4 (U. P).—Alf M. Landon presented to] the political and military rulers of | the worid today an appeal to sup-| port President Roosevelt's proposal for an international peace confers ence. He criticized some of the foreign policies of the present Atuisitee

Health Chief Gives Tips

In an address last night before the Methodist Episcopal Church uniting conference, Mr. Landon,

leader of the minority party in the United States, declared that Adolf Hitler's speech last Friday leaves the door open for further dis-| cussion and urged that “we explore] constructively the possibility for such discussion.”

Suggests New Appeal

Mr. Landon further suggested that “there might even be in the near] future a general American appeal to the world for peace.”

Mr, Landon’s speech, nationally and internationally, was! considered especially significant in| view of the part he has played in| this country's international affairs since he was defeated by Mr. Roosevelt in the last election. He, was chosen by the President as a delegate to the Pan-American Con- | ference at Lima last winter. | Mr. Landon declared that he, found it necessary to admit that Herr Hitler in his Reichstag address | “made a rather strong case against economic injustices.” “We must face the situation as it is,” he said, “and in doing $0 let us face frankly the fact that] the blundering of statesmen in’ Britain, France, and even in America, are to some extent at least responsible for what has come to! pass—including Herr Hitler, also.

Republic Comes First {

“It is always a dangerous thing for a political leader to cross party | lines. Nevertheless, to support my] President I do so. Whether he deserves it or not is not the question. The Republic deserves it, and that is all that should count with every citizen. i “A great war threatens. Millions of fathers and mothers are facing the possibility that they will soon be walking the fioor as their sons! go into battle. On the face of things it seems that some nations are made, and bent on ruin. |

“On closer examination, however, such is not the case. It may or may not be true of certain rulers. Certainly it is not true of the common people of any country.” i He said the United States is the “one great power that has not yet been fully drawn into the balance of power game, and the ancient boundary line disputes which have prevailed in Europe since before the Roman republic. And, please God, may we never be!”

Warns Against Mediation

Mr. Landon declared it would be folly to say the United States could be indifferent to developments in! Europe and possibly stay out of trouble by giving economic assistance to some and imposing eco- | nomic quarantines on others. | “Of course we are heading inte dangerous paths. . .. | “But notwithstanding this danger, the United States is the one great power which has the chance to offer something other than the mere choosing-up of sides before going into battle.

DETROIT, May 4 (U. P).—The|}

bandits who forced an aged physician to remove a bullet with a razor blade were captured early today. They were Orville Watson, 29, and

Edward Riley, 37. With them was|3

their girl friend, Susanna Smith, 22, who also was arrested. Watson was the man from whose back Dr. Sigmynd Hirschfeld dug a bullet with a razor blade in a dingy Chicago rooming house while Riley pressed a pistol into his back. Operation Is Success The efficacy of Dr. Hirschfeld’s science was self-evident. Watson, though in pain, walked unaided into a police station between his captors and submitted to a long examination before being taken to a hospital. The men are wanted in Chicago for murdering one man and wounding two policemen in an attempt to hold up a Chicago tavern Tuesday night. Watson was wounded in a gun fight with the police.

Shots Fired in Chase They fled here, and today a police car found them in an automobile near the home of Watson's mother. There was a chase of several miles at 70 miles an hour during which the two policemen fired five shots at their tires. The men flung away their pistols during the chase, Captured, they confessed the Chicago holdup, police said. Police said that both men had served terms in Southern Michigan Prison and in other penitentiaries. Miss Smith said Watson was her husband.

GROSS INCOME TAX UNIT MAY JOIN SUT

FT. WAYNE, May 4 (U. P)— Sheriff Walter E. Felger said today that on advice of his attorney he has refused to sign a plea of abatement to injunction procedings pending against him in Superior Court here. The Ft. Wayne Food Council is seeking to enjoin the Sheriff from serving warrants for delinquent payment of gross income tax. Authorities indicated that the State Gross Income Tax Division may now file a petition to intervene as a party defendant in the suit, and if this is granted, file the plea of abatement itself. Representatives of the Attorney General's office contend the suit should be transfered to the Marion Circuit Court because the Gross Income Tax Division, for whom the Sheriff is an agent in the action, has no branch office here.

A 20-year-old mother received a divorce from her 51-year-old husband in Superior Court today. Mrs. [Adria Armstrong told Judge Pro Tem. John Baldwin that she was married Sept. 21, 1935, when she was 17. Her husband left her five weeks later, she said. Approximately 88,000 Indiana families are financing homes with an average loan of $1310 through member institutions of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis, Fred T. Greene, president, reported today. Mr. Greene delivered the organization’s annual statement before 300 officers and directors of 210 member associations in the Sixth Federal Home Loan Bank System District at the Columbia Club. The local bank made 339 individual loans to the member savings and loan associations aggregating $8,361,025 during the year, bringing the total advanced to more than 31 million dollars, he said.
