ST. LOUIS, April 27 (U. P) —The mpredictable romance of John Barve. rymere and Elaine Barrie reached another quarrel-separation chapter; today. ! It may go to another divorce; there has been one. Or it may go on to another reconciliation; there _ have been several. Mr. Barrymore, 57, who became famous on stage and screen by making love — to use his own words, . “passionate, five-alarm love —confirmed last night that he and Miss Barrie, 24 his fourth wile, * agreed to separate. They are appearing at the Amer jean Theater in the play, “My Dear Children.” He is & show. She is one of three daugh-

Theatergoers said he spanked her with unusual vigor last night. After the final curtain he seciuded him- + self in his dressing room. He sent a note to newspapermen saving that Miss Barrie would with-| draw from the cast Saturday at the end of the shows St. Louis run. . Finally he revealed the separation. | “Things have reached such a state; through constant arguing and gen-| eral incompatibility that we are go-| ing to separate.” he said. “There is nothing definite about a divorce. We just cant get along. If there is any divorce action, she will file it. “Naturally, she being a member of the cast, were still acting together. | The play's the thing.”

Living in Separate Suite

Miss Barrie confirmed she would; stay on until Saturday but declined | to say whether she would file for divorce. She revealed she had been! living in a separate suite at Mr. Barrymore's hotel for a week. The separation appeared to have been agreed upon under friendly terms, indicating that a chance still remained for another reconciliation. Miss Barrie said she had not seen a lawver, She married Mr. Barrymore, her first husband, at Yuma, Ariz, Nov. 9. 1936. She became friendly with him while he was convalescing at a New York hospital. They quarreled shortly after their meeting and Mr. Barrymore fled via train toward Hollywood. She fol-| lowed in a plane, a reconcilation! was effected and they were married. She obtained a divorce on the! grounds of incompatibilty in April, 1337, but had the decree set aside.

MARIAN ANDERSON | ASKS D.A.R. HALL

HOLLYWOOQD, April 27 (U. PP) — Marian Anderson, Negro contralto who was refused the use of Con-| stitution Hall at Washington for a concert, made a second application | today to the D. A. R, owners of] the hall. !

The application, for a concert) \

next November, was made by S. Hurok, Miss Anderson's manager; | to Mrs. Henry M. Robert Jr. presi-| dent general of the D. A. R, to lease the hall “on any evening from the 15th of November, 1939, to the 27th of November, 1939, inclusive, and on the Sunday afternoons of November 19 and 26." Mrs. Robert issued a statement in Washington, which, without mentioning the singer by name, said the refusal was due to conflicting engagements in the hall.

Humor Varies With Places; Proven in ‘Heart of Paris’

As universal a phenomenon as humor ‘undeniably has its nationalistic traits; one has only to contemplate the Broadway hit comedies that flop in London, and vice versa. So, if only for its departure from the bea American track, the Filmarte Guild's “The Heart of Paris,” shown at the Indianapolis Athletic Club last evening, provided an interesting and enjoyable time, This is a picture which decidedly could not, or would not have been made in Hollywood. Nor is there anyone on the West Coast who quite the qualities of Raimu, its star. Raimu is a gruff, likeable fellow whe can be comic or dramatic with equal facility. He can draw a character, rather than simply repeat a set of mannerisms, and this

In the end, he strikes the girl down for making a thief of his son; an act for which he had defended her so heroically in court. Raimu is the whole show, despite some neat competition and the presence of Michele Morgan, an attractive, Paulette Goddardish looking actress, Next month the Filmarte is offering “Grand Illusion.” ® 8 @ As amateur essays of Gilbert and Sullivan go, the Burroughs Schools of Music production of “The Pirates of Penzance,” at Keith's last night, was quite creditable.
