RELIGIOUS FEUD IS BLAMED FOR WIFE'S MURDER

Jgalous Grandmother Says ==She Wanted to Rear Son’s Children.

“a WHITE CLOUD, Mich. April 27 @ P.).—A jealous, domineering grandmother has confessed, police said today, that she plotted the slaying of her favorite son's wife so tat she might rear the grandchildren in her cwn religious faith. Mrs. Matilda Cassidy, 46, and her sons, Charles and Elton, were said to have admitted to State Police that they sat down in the milk shed on their farm Feb. 8 and decided how they should kill Charles’ wife, Helen, a 20-year-old mother of four children. Eighteen days later Elton, afpting—he said—on his mother’s instructions, choked the unwanted member of their family circle to death and hanged her body from a stair-post to simulate suicide.

Bitter Feud Revealed ‘The confessions disclosed a bitter family feud that matched a young mother’s love for her children against the strong-willed desire of her mother-in-law that the children be raised according to re religious

creed that the Cassidy family had}! accepted for generations. The slain},

mother was of a different faith, and it was her desire that the children attend her church. “We planned it all in the milkhouse,” Mrs. Cassidy confessed in a matter-of-fact voice, without emotion or apparent remorse. “At first we thought of poison, but we decided against that because it might harm the kiddies. Then we agreed upon hanging to make it look like suicide. It was decided that Elton should do it.” Mrs. Cassidy's confession, which corroborated earlier admissions by her sons, revealed that she had quarreled frequently with the girl who had taken her favorite son from her. Charles Cassidy, handicapped by a speech impediment, had never passed beyond the lower grades in school. Even after his marriage he was dependent largely on his mother and when he quarreled with his wife last winter he went to his mother’s home, taking three of the children with him.

Charles Went to Detroit

It was after Charles’ wife re-j gained custody of the children, that the murder plot was agreed upon, the confessions revealed. As always, the Elder Mrs. Cassidy saw to it that Charles should be out of danger. He went to Detroit on the night of the staying so that he would have an alibi. Elton Cassidy confessed that he went to his brother's ramshackle farm home last Feb. 28. He strangled Helen Cassidy and hanged her body in a stairwell. Then he covered up the children, the oldest of whom is 4, and went home. The temperature outside was zero and there was no heat in the home. The body was found the next day by a third Cassidy brother, Andrew, who was not involved in the plot. The children were whimpering in their beds, and the youngest baby, only 2 months old, was nursing on a bottle of frozen milk.

Boy’s Story Brings Autopsy

. The death at first was believed to be suicide, but the steady insistence of 4-year-old Charles Cassidy Jr. that “Elton put a rope around mother’s neck” led to an autopsy that showed the mother was dead of suffocation when hanged. Investigation of the family religious feud and the child's repeated accusations pointed to the Cassidys as the slayers. At their arraignment yesterday, the Cassidys were bound over to the June term of Circuit Court.

Halts Court .Probating of Own Estate

SAN FRANCISCO, April 27 (U. P). — Seventy-four-year-old Mrs. Flora Alice Casse halted probate of her own estate in Superior Court yesterday as the court was about to award final administration papers to her daughter, Mrs. Marion Bowen. «I just heard yesterday that I was ‘dead,’” Mrs. Casse, small and dressed in black, said as she hustled into court. “I came here to do something about it. I'm very much alive.” She said she had been iiving in the San Francisco Bay Area under the names of Morris and Beeler and a family dispute was responsible for the false report of her death. “She (the daughter) knew I was alive,” she told Superior Judge I. Z. Harris. “I saw her only last July.” Judge Harris ordered her attorney to have Mrs. Bowen in court today to explain her action.
