3000 Fire Inspection , Reports Studied.

A special luncheon meeting of the Indianapolis Smoke Abatement League to commemorate its 10th anniversary is to be held May 10 at the Canary Cottage, Dr. Herman G. Morgan, City Health Board secretary and president of the league, said today. John F. White, E. O. Snethen, Roy O. Johnson and Paul Robertson, charter members of the group, are to be honored at the luncheon. Meanwhile, J. W. Clinehens, City Combustion Engineer, was beginning the study of 3000 fire inspection reports turned over to him this week by fire inspectors. These reports are the first of what is to be a complete survey of every home and factory in the City to be made by firemen and combustion inspectors. From these reports, Mr. Clinehens said he already has found a large number of gas and oil heaters that did not have air vents. Records of the City Health Department show that numerous pecple are stricken from fumes from these ventless heaters each year. Defects in heating equipment and smoke-creating units are being reported to the combustion engineer and every ordinance pertaining to these factors will be used to bring about their elimination, Mr. Clinehens said. At the May 10th meeting “steps will be taken to further the league’s cause toward the establishment of an adequate smoke abatement program through the Mayor, Board of Safety and the City Council,” Mr. Johnson said.

OFFICER LOSES IN STATE HIGH COURT

The Indiana Supreme Court today had ruled that persons beginning employment with police departments after the age of 35 years are not entitled to receive pension benefits. The ruling was made in the case of Charles H. Clemens, who sued the City of Indianapolis and the Police Pension Fund trustees for benefits. Mr. Clemens contended in his suit that he first joined the Indianapolis police force in 1922, before he reached the age of 35. He resigned in 1923 and was reinstated in 1927 after he had reached the age of 35. The Hendricks Circuit Court ruled in favor of the City and the Supreme Court affirmed the judgment.
