INFLOW OF GOLD HELD AS MAJOR U. S. PROBLEM
Huge Bank Reserves Viewed As Cause for Decline In Interest Rates.
NEW YORK, April 25 (U. P).— Accumulation by this nation of approximately 58 per cent of the world’s monetary gold stock and continued flow of the metal to this country presents us with a “real economic problem,” the Guaranty survey, publication of the Guaranty Trust Co. said today. Pointing out that this country has been criticized in some quarters for taking so large a share of the gold, now amounting to $15, 604,000,000, the survey says: “A large part of the gold came here as a result of the movement of foreign capital, and that part of it which came as a consequence of repatriation of American capital and of our export surplus in commodity trade certainly reflected no desire on the part of the United States to increase its gold stock at the expense of the rest of the world. “The huge bank reserves due primarily to the gold flow are among the factors that have caused interest rates in the United States to decline almost to the vanishing point.”
