Circle Bills Four Films And Dorsey

Clarinetist of Swing Bros. Coming Friday as May Highlight.

The merry month of May this year will bring, in addition to the traditional Kentucky Derby and Speedway Race, a quartet of highly touted pictures to the Circle screen. Meanwhile the theater has booked another stage show for the coming week to round out its April attractions on “name” bands and favorite radio and film stars. Jimmy, the clarinet playing member of the Dorsey brothers, will bring his band to the Circle Friday. Besides Swing

In addition to a heaping portion of solid swing, the bill promises Bob Eberle and Helen O'Connell, singers; Ray McKinley, Ruthie Barnes, Emmett Oldfield (who was featured in “Life Begins at 8:40”) and Eddie Ware. . Leading off the Circle’s “May Festival” of cinema attractions will be Cecil B. DeMille’s “Union Pacific,” replete with puffing engines, wild Indians and a host of players headed by Joel McCrea and Barbara Stanwyck. Following this glorification of early railroading, the telephone’s pioneer days will come in for attention with “The Life of Alexander Graham Bell,” slated for May 12. Don Ameche and Loretta Young are starred.

Espionage for Race “Bugs”

The following week brings “Rose of Washington Square,” with Alice Faye. Like “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” it has a tuneful vintage title, and is said to be built along the same lines. For the 500-mile race week-end, the Circle will offer the visiting patrons one of the year’s most talked-and-guessed-about pictures, “Confessions of a Nazi Spy.” It features Edward G. Robinson and includes a lot of players identified only by numbers, for fear their foreign relatives might be the victims of reprisals. It’s said to come right out and name names.

COLLEGE WORK |S DISCUSSED BY INSURANGE AIDS

Indianapolis Among Centers For Such Training, Says Krueger.

A program emphasizing recruiting of college men for surance jobs was presented today at a Midwest Life Insurance Management Conference panel discussion at the Severin Hotel, “Coilege men are subjected to tests of all kinds to determine their personalities and abilities,” said Edward A. Krueger of Indianapolis in summarizing the discussion in which four other Indianapolis agents took part. “With Butler University and the Indiana University Extension Center, Indianapolis is one of the leading centers for life insurance training,” he added. Local men who took part in panel discussion include Horace E. Storer, Dan W. Flickinger, E. Leo Smith and Oren D, Pritchard. James A. Giffin, assistant manager of agencies, Phoenix Mutual, Hartford, Conn., will be guest speaker at the dinner which will close the conference tonight.

1940 BECOMES GUESSING GAME

Correspondents Flunk Out, Cross Bridges Before They Get to Them.

By THOMAS L. STOKES Times Special Writer WASHINGTON, April 24 — A novel method of trying to pick a 1940 Presidential candidate has come along. It is a combination of the old parlor games of “Historical Characters” and “Twenty Questions,” with a touch of “information, Please” and a bit of “Guess Whom,” including such clues as “he has brown hair, brown eyes, likes fancy ties and lemon in his tea.” A week ago, Washington newspaper correspondents were intrigue to receive postcards with detailed specifications of the logical 1940 Republican candidate. ‘They were told that a week later they would receive the name. A guessing contest started.

Claims New Plane Wing Is ‘Perfect’

LOS ANGELES, April 24 (U. P.).— Development of “the perfect airplane wing” was claimed today by David R. Davis, veteran aeronautical designer and former partner of Donald Douglas, airplane builder. Mr. Davis said the wing he has developed is 100 percent effective and will increase plane speed at least 20 per cent. Mr. Davis said he submitted his formula to the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory at California Institute of Technology where a sample wing was constructed and then tested in wind tunnels. He said the wing solved the problem of giving a plane the maximum possible lift with the minimum possible drag.

MURDER AND VANITY SEND YOUTH TO GHAIR

BELLEFONTE, Pa. April 24 (U. P.) —Ernest M. Hipple, 22, a hill"billy, paid for the sins of vanity and for the crime of murder early today. He was electrocuted at Rockview Penitentiary. Hipple killed Mrs. Jennie Porter, 70, near Wheelersville, Pa., Feb. T, 1938, while robbing her. Lieutenant Governor Samuel S. Lewis, disguised as a law breaker, got himself admitted to the Sullivan County Jail at La Porte, where Hipple was then confined after making a second appeal. There he heard Hipple boast at length and in detail to his pals of the bull pen how he had fooled the alienists by “acting dumb.” Mr. Lewis reported to the Pardon Board on Thursday and it decided not to intervene,

HUNTSVILLE, Tex. April 24 (U. P.).—Governor O’Daniel’s campaign against capital punishment was ignored by the Pardon and Parole Board yesterday and the Texas electric chair was used for the first Sabbath executions in history. Genaro Lugo, 23, who killed a nightwatchman, and James Clifford Miles, 22, who attacked a white woman, were executed at midnight. LAST

Briefly, the unnamed aspirant was described as having honesty and! courage, as being acceptable to labor, agriculture and industry, as having experience in state and national office, a record for sound financial administration and for sponsoring progressive legislation, as possessing youth appeal, humble heritage, radio appeal, ability to meet people and win a warm response, and freedom from employment by, or connection with, Wall Street or big business. The postcards came from New York. The possibilities were combed, and | one by one the newspapermen were! compelled to discard such promimently mentioned figures as Thomas E. Dewey, Senator Taft of Ohio, Senator Vandenberg of Michigan, Mayor La Guardia of New York, Senator Lodge of Massachusetts, Rep. Bruce Barton of New York, Governor Bricker of Ohio, and various others. Each was lacking in some qualification. Today correspondents received another postcard saying: “Here is the man who fulfills all requirements! Styles Bridges, United States Senator.” Senator Bridges had been overlooked in the shuffle.
