LOEW'S
Young, gangling, coltish ‘Corinne Luchsaire is something new in the parade of French film stars. She isn't “cute,” and both she and her director know it. Consequently there is no pouting, simpering or batting of eyelids. She even seems to be trying to speak English with a minimum of accent, and doing very well at it. These facts, if nothing else, would make ‘Prison Without Bars,” how
at Loew’s, an unusual picture. Tn addition, there is an interesting, honest and straightforward picture of reformatory life, Its told with the traditional and refreshing leisurely pace peculiar to English pictures, and it bears Alexander Korda’s artistic stamp as well as his name in the billing. CIRCLE
Despite the absence of Ethel Shutta from the Circle’s stage show this ‘week (Miss Shutta is il), Judy Canova, aided by Annie and brother Zeke sing, yodel and dance their way through & hilarious performance.
The trio of Judith, Diane and Leon (that's what folks call ‘em back in Unadilly) “breeze ‘em on up” in & number of real Unadilly songs which they present in & high class hillbilly manner. Judy's yodeling in the upper register is almost as good as her facial contortions. On their last encore, Miss ‘Canova, spurred on by the vocal accompaniment of Zeke and Annie, executes something novel in the way of comic dancing with not & glimmer of expression on her face. Paula Kelly, vocalist with Al Dona - hue’s Orchestra, does some nice work with the band on the choruses.

one, but its ‘treatment sidesteps the obvious. A new matron, committed to the idea that when &.young person is happy he doesn’t want to be bad, takes charge of & girl's reformatory in France. Her methods clash with those of the case-hard-ened, 20-year veteran who preceded her. Miss Luchaire is cast as one of the inmates, a frightened young thing sent to prison on & trumpedup charge by her stepmother. The picture is factual enough not to make all the girls turn angelic at the first touch of kindness, but Suzanne (Miss Luchaire) is one of those who blossom under the) ministration.
