NEW YORK, April 22 (U. P)— 3

Prices of most leading issues sagged

A on the stock market today in one

of the lightest sessions of the year. Cautious operators transacted only routine business were long waits between quotations on the tickers. Attendance in the Street was depleted by lack of in-

terest in the market in advance of |;

the Hitler answer to the Roosevelt peace plan. Prices started the day irregularly

higher and then sagged steadily. gon 30

Around closing time losses replaced many initial gains. There were a few exceptions. Railroad and oil shares held bet-

ter than other major groups. Util- |B

ities, motors and some mercantile shares ruled steady. Steels eased slightly and coppers generally reg-

fstered fractional declines. Mixed |g

tendencies were noted in aviations. The trading community was watching with interest the action of the British in praetically com mandeering the steamship Antonia for shipping gold to New York. Business news was sparse although most of , the items were favorable.

UNDERTONE OF WHEAT STEADY: CORN WEAKENS

May Oats, at 31 Cents, High For More Than Year; Trading Light.

CHICAGO, April 22 (U. P)~— Wheat prices showed a steady to firm undertone in light trading on the Chicago Board of Trade today. Better than expected aetion at Liverpool and scattered week-end covering were constructive factors.

At the close wheat was up % to 1 cent, May 69%; corn was off 4 to 3% cent, May 49, and oats were % to % cent higher, May 31. Opening quotations were unchanged to 4 cent higher. Traders were not inclined to press the selling side in view of firmness at Liverpool and the uncertainties of the European political situation. Liverpool wheat closed !4 cent lower to '% cent higher. Winnipeg wheat prices were steady. Reports of dust storms in western Kansas attracted some buying. Weather conditions in the winter wheat belt were mostly fair, and the forecast did not indicate any important precipitation. Local shippers sold 56,000 bushels of cash wheat. Corn prices ruled relatively weak, with particular pressure on the September future. A bearish Buenos

. | Aires market was a depressing fac-

tor, Oats again showed strength,

"6O0D MUSIC" By James Thrasher

Tonight the NBC Symphony Orchestra is being turned over, bag and baggage, to the young ItalianAmerican composer, Gian-Carlo Menotti, for the premiere of his radio opera, “The Old Maid and the Thief.”

Mr. Menotti, you will recall, is the man who wrote the very successful short opera, “Amelia Goes to the Ball.” Done first at the Curtis Institute two years ago this month, it had two performances at the Metropolitan last season and two or three I believe, this past year. going some, usually go. The new work was commissioned by NBC and is written specially for the broadcast. Like ‘“Amelia Goes to the Ball,” both libretto and score are by the composer, but the new opera is in English. There are 14 brief episodes, with the announcer “setting the stage” for each scene. Described as a “satirical farce,” the scene is laid in a small American town of the present day. There are only four roles, which are to be sung by Mary Hopple, contralto; Dorothy Sarnoff, soprano; Margaret Daum, also a soprano, and Robert Weede, baritone. Alberto Erede, another young Italian who made his bow to America during the Salzburg Opera Company’s tour, was Mr. Menotti's choice for the conductor. It seems that the sound-effect

cians. For the composer, in true radio-dramatic style, has called for the nojses of an automobile, a door= bell, doors opening and closing, and a cuckoo clock and the crashing of bottles, among other things. Mr. Menotti is of the opinion that one-dimensional opera has its ade vantages as well as drawbacks. “Through the ear it is possible to appeal to the imagination of radio listeners in ways that permit each to visualize settings and actions that are more natural and Sisving than scenic artists and stage direc~ tors can possibly supply.” 8 » 8

Tonight's opera broadcast.will be at the usual hour of 9 o'clock, on WIRE, and it will bring the season’s excellent Saturday series to a close, But good news—the NBC Symphony is to begin a Sunday evening series at 7 p. m. on April 30, continuing through the summer.

The programs will be an hour in length and, apparently, “popular” in nature. Hans Steinberg will conduct the first six programs in the new series, and Erich Leinsdorf, the Metropolitan youthful Wagnerian conductor, the next four. Frank

John Barbirolli will conduct, With the Detroit Symphony and Fritz Reiner tomorrow night will be Ezio Pinza, basso of the Metropolitan Opera. He will include music by Handel, Scarlatti, Legrenzi and Verdi in his selections.
