ISLANDS SECURE UNDER AMERICA, | M'NUTT ADVISES
None Dares Attack, He Says, As Filipinos Wonder About Future.
MANILA, P. I, April 21 (U. P) — The Philippines wonder today where, if anywhere, it fits in Japan's plan » for establishment of a “new order in East Asia” Juan de la Cruz—the Filipino . equivalent of John Q. Citizen—hears warnings from all sides that the 7000 islands in his archipelago will be next, if and when Japan con-
s Quers China.
From Chiang Kai-shek he hears that Japanese occupation of FEainan Island, 650 miles west of Manila, is a direct threat to the Philippines as well as to British Hong Kong and French Indo-China.
McNutt Soothes Fears
He reads Washington dispatches quoting various Congressmen and defense experts as saying Japan threatens the Philippines, and therefore America must: (1) keep and protect the islands, or (2) set the Philippines Commonwealth free and n thereby avoid an otherwise inevitable conflict with Japan. From President Roosevelt's official representative in the Commonwealth, High Commissioner Paul V. MeNutt, he hears the opinion ho foreign power would dare attack the islands so long as the American flag floats over them. From Tokyo he hears gssurances of Japan’s friendship for the Philippines, and denunciation of “ridiculous” speculation that the 15,000 Japanese of Davao—one of the southernmost insular provinces— might become the “Sudetens of the Philippines.”
Economies Is Factor
None can say for sure that the Japanese invasion of China and deflance of Western powers with Far Eastern interests has fully convinced Filipino leaders they no longer want the independence they have sought for 40 years.
Economic considerations are more likely to be the cause if such a change of mind occurs, according to Filipinos who have studied the Far East's troubles carefully.

Notre Dane Club to Send
Ex-Student
DETROIT, April 21 (U. P.)—0Old grads of Notre Dame, who admire spunk whether it is on the gridiron or on a sickbed, rallied today to the side of David Van Wallace and said they would send him to the Grotto of Miracles at Lourdes, France, in hope that he may be miraculously cured. Mr. Van Wallace suffered a paralytic injury on July 4, 1924, while he was a freshman at Notre Dame. He dived into shallow water in Lake St. Clair here and fractured his neck. Doctors said he would die within a few days, but Mr. Van Wallace's answering laugh was an indication of his indomitable spirit. By force of will he slowly has battled his physical handicap until today he has partial use of his hands. His physicians, however, believe that not even his will to win can bring further improvement. In the hope that some miraculous power at the Lourdes grotto might help him, the Detroit Notre Dame Club announced it would send Mr. Van Wallace there. Howard Beechinor, club president, said it would
raise $5000 to pay the expenses of Mr. Van Wallace and a nurse to the | shrine in Southern France where | supernatural recoveries from illness’

and disease have been reported. They probably will leave in July, Mr. Beechinor said.
FARMERS’ INCOME DROPS $25,000,000
WASHINGTON, April 21 (U. P). —Farmers had a cash income of $487.000,000 in March, a reduction of $25000000 from March, 1938, but $54,000,000 more than in February, the Agriculture Department reported today. The larger income in March as compared with February was ccntrary to the usual seasonal trend. Most of the increase was accounted for, however, by Government payments, which were $95,000,000 in March compared with $56,000,000 in February.

FARMER 1S JOVIAL
ABOUT LIFE TERM
BEDFORD, April 21 (U. P)e== Samuel Pierce, 69-year-old farmer,
today was taken to the Michigan City State Penitentiary to serve a life term for the killing of Earl Rodch of Avoca, his neighbor, in a dispute over the boundary lines of their property. Pierce suddenly changed his plea to guilty in Circuit Court yesterday, and was immediately sentenced by Judge John OC. Branaman. He displayed no concern when he changed his plea and was jovial when Sheriff Lincoln Dunbar returned him to the county jail to
await transfer to the prison. Mr. Roach was killed Feb. 12.
Coed Smacks Her Way to $5 Victory
SAN DIEGO, Cal, April 21 Rlaine Hooker, a very, very pretty coed at San Diego State College, collected $5 today on a sure thing bet, if there ever was one. The bet was that she could kiss a man a minute on the campus, for five minutes. She won with 80 seconds to spare, while men were lining up hopefully. Robert Johnson, a fellow student, paid up the $5. He wasn’t one of those kissed,
COUNTY TAX RETURNS RUNNING GELINQUENT
With 25 per cent of the County's tax collection in, Chief Deputy Treasurer Albert O. Koesters today forecast a 10 per cent delinquency. Approximately 11 per cent of the taxpaying public failed to pay taxes on time last year. The deadline for the spring collection is May 1. More than $2,000,000 of the $9,000,000 collectible in the spring already has been paid, Mr. Koesters
said. He added that since establishment of the pay-by-mail system,
over-the-counter payments dropped about 80 per cent.
