This capial city of the largest soft-coal producing state is also the base of the most determined efforts

being made by the Progressive Miners of America against the United Mine Workers, who have furnished costs Ou on the leadership and much of the fin- «a ®

ancing for the C. I. O. This campaign is pelieved to be a main reason why the mine workers and bituminous operators have been deadlocked for weeks in New

York negotiations. | ] . If John L. Lewis can obtain a Die 5 Ww kg closed shop contract out of the New York parleys, or can get the “pen-! % ale alty clause” ditched so that his; $ 500000 miner members can strike . at will, he will be in position to E . U. M. W. Head Scoffs

William Blizzard, head of the U. M. W. forces here in the absence of Van Bittner—who has given most of his attention recently to the Chicago office of the Steel Workers Organizing Committee—scoffed at Mr. O'Flaherty’s claims of progress. | The Progressive organizer claimed) formation of seven locals and acqui-| sition of 3300 members in the 10 months of work here, but Mr. Blizzard gave the impression he] thought that was highly exaggerated. He mentioned that the U. M.! W. can claim 84000 cues-paying| members in this district. “There won't be any trouble in| this district,” he said, “despite the] fact that I guess more men have] been killed and murdered and jailed | in southern West Virginia in the past 20 years than in all the rest] of the United States put together.: “That is,” he added, “there won't] be any trouble unless the operators try to go nonunion. Then there] would be trouble. You might call this district a ‘volcano under con- | trol’—plenty of possible trouble, but the mine workers have the situation | well in hand and are going to keep | it that way.”

SHELBYVILLE STRIKE IS REPORTED SETTLED

Settlement of a strike of more] than 100 employees of the Albert] Furniture Co. at Shelbyville was] reported today by Thomas Hutson, State Labor Division director. A compromise agreement was) reached after more than a week of} conciliation efforts, Mr. Hutson said. Conciliators of the State division now are attempting to settle a strike of 1100 workers at the Singer Sewing Machine Co. at South Bend, he said.
