Border

Adventure By OREN ARNOLD

CAST OF CHARACTERS BETTY MARY JORDAN—Pretty young Border Patrol service secretary. SHERIDAN STARR—Handsome Border _ Patrol officer. HOPE KILDARE — Stars’s fellow offi- © cer, also a bachelor. LOUIS BARRO—Mexican smuggler.

Yesterday—Hepe and Sheridan are startled by a noise in the canyon, then Betty appears. A half hour later, the trio hear a horse snort. There's trouble ahead new! The officers want Betty

to go home.

CHAPTER - SEVEN or HAT you suggest is foolish, and if you insist on it I shall scream at once, so there!” “No! No, Betty Mary! sh-h-h-h! My glory, Hope!” “There's a string of em. They're . moving on at a fast walk.” “Betty Mary—please, for the love . of" “No! Absolutely no! If you'll both go with me, all right. I think you should, rather than face such a number of them. But to leave just one of you—no!” “But one Border Patrol man can arrest a hundred aliens! Why Hope or I, either can stay and—" “No!” The emphatic argument — in rapid-fire whisperings — was conducted as Sherry, Hope and Betty Mary crouched in the darkness behind a boulder. They wanted to send her back to safety while perhaps 10 minutes of time remained. But she wouldn't go. “Then you'll lie right down here «flat and not make a sound till morning!” Sheridan commanded. He wrapped his woolen field blanket around her as she prepared to crouch in safety behind the great rock. “Don’t you make a single noise, no matter what happens!” they repeated, and then all at once she was alone,

T was unnecessary for the two officers to discuss their own plans, even though a woman had come to disturb them. Twentyfour hours earlier they had agreed on points of attack if and when aliens should come up San Felipe Canyon. They would separate, as usual, Hope going right and] Sherry left. They would suffer the enemy to pass by Sherry unseen, then Hope would challenge. If there was resistance, Sherry would be in position to make a flank attack. By sound rather than by sight Sheridan knew that there must be at least a dozen horses coming, and of course as many men. He crouched now behind a thorny shrub, listening to the creak of leather and the breathing of animals laboring up the canyon slope. Sherry waited for Hope's challenge. “HALT!” The challenge came. clear. “Manos arriba!” Hope continued, shouting in Spanish. “The first man to move will be shot. This is the Border Patrol!” i CRACK!

SHOT came instantly from the caravan. Then half a dozen more. Evidently the men had been riding with weapons in hand, perhaps even cocked, here in the dan-| gerous American canyon. The fire! was directed wildly at the sound of Hope Kildare’s voice. | Then suddenly there was a dim-! ming confusion of noises. Riders dismounting, lest frightened horses fall and tumble down steep rocky slopes. Snorts and stampings; a boulder rolling; a horse squealing; men shouting excitedly. More shots: came quickly, too. Hope had not: vet answered the shots with his’ own guns. i When there was a momentary lull —"Los federales aqui!” cried Sherry, roaring it loudly from within a few yards of the foreigners. “You have heard the command! We are officers of the United States. You are under arrest!” ! ” ” 2 IS sudden warning from so near served to unnerve the aliens. as the officers had planned; but it did not cause them to surrender, and this verified the fact they] were being smuggled over by Luis| Barro. Barro dealt heavily in Chinese. Russians, and others who; spoke little or no Spanish, and] even the Mexican aliens he! smuggled invariably were told what to expect if the Patrol accosted them. | A babble of voice mingled with | other noises in the canyon now. More shots broke into the bedlam. “Let 'em have it!” Hope Kildare shouted and Sherry instantly heard and saw the flash of Hope's gun. He knew Hope wouldn't be in that spot a second later—he would fire and jump aside, lest the flash reveal him as a target—but he knew Hope's deadly rifle and pistol would stampede the caravan’s horses and men. Guns and shouts and screams echoed off the other canyon wall, | bounced back and gained new volume. | “Are you all right, Hope? Sheridan?” screamed Betty Mary then. “Ahn-n-n-n-h!” groaned Sherry. But he couldn't go to her now. “Yes! Lay low!” All he could do was shout at her, and resume shooting. He knew now that he would have to shoot to kill men. Men were shoot- | ing at him, and at his friend Hope. ! And up there a ways was a foolish] —but adorable—girl. Again Sherry lifted his powerful rifie. 2 = 2

long the battle lasted. |

It seemed to her that she lay in| her blanket for centuries. When she | could stand it no longer she got up and called and had a reassuring answer. Then for another century she crouched on hands and knees, head down as if she were a Mohammedan at prayer. She heard men calling, screaming, shouting, between the shots. She stood up beside the rock, and when she did so she instantly saw Hope Kildare silhouetted near her on the east ridge, fighting hand-to-hand with somebody. She knew it was Hope because he wore the unmistakable stiffbrimmed hat of the Border Patrol, much like an army hat, and she was close enough to see his familiar form. In that instant, too, she saw a second alien top the ridge and pause right behind him. When this second man raised a rifie—probably empty now—to crash clublike down on Hope Kildares
