Congress Gets ‘Sad News: State Income Tax Is Due
Times Special WASHINGTON, April 13.—A letter containing sad news was received by all the Indiana Congressmen today from Clarence A. Jackson, director of the Indiana Gross Income and Store License Division of the State Treasury. “May we welcome you as a member of the happy group of Indiana gross income taxpayers,” the letter opens and then points out that the recent Supreme Court decisions make it possible to include Federal payrollers in the State payoff.
Mr. Jackson enclosed the proper forms to complete the payment and graciously pointed out that while the first quarterly installment was due April 1, he was granting them
until May 15 to pay up.
After setting out a few of the accomplishments of the tax levy, such as paying teachers $700 a year, the letter closes with the statement that no further legislation is needed to make this touch. Rep. Forest A. Harness (R. Ind), who voted against the reciprocal tax bill this session because he believed it unconstitutional, says he looked at the Indiana statute and agrees that Mr. Jackson is right.
