Women Experts on Flower
Arrangement
Will Address
2 Groups Here This Month
Constance Spry to Address Garden Club April 21; Dorothy Biddle to Conduct Clinic for Department Club Group.
By VIRGINIA MOORHEAD MANNON Two widely known experts on flower arrangement are coming to
Indianapolis this month. Constance Spry,
the international authority who has studios in
London and New York, is to address the Indianapolis Garden Club’s meeting at 2:30 p. m. Aprii 21 at the home of Mrs. Frederic M. Ayres. Dorothy Biddle, editor of Garden Digest, is to conduct a flower ar-
rangement “clinic”
for the garden department of the Woman's De-
partment Club at 2 p. m. April 27. Presidents of all the City’s garden clubs have been invited to be special guests by Mrs. Merritt E. Woolf,
garden department chairman.
Mrs. Spry has planned the decor for many fashionable British
weddings. She *
‘did” the Duchess of Gloucester’s wedding, decorated
St. Paul's Cathedral for the marriage of Lord Derby's granddaughter and the Russian Church for the nuptials of the daughter of Lady Howard de Walden. Her keen sense of color is behind the statement,

replicas of the flower piece Mrs. Spry designed for her hair, made up in- colors to harmonize with her evening gowns.
Last December Mrs.
Spry opened her New York shop in the
East Fifties in a “done over” house completely devoted to flowers. She exhibits a single dramatic flower arrangement in each of the two great front windows and goes jingling around the studio wearing a gorgeous collection of bangle bracelets reaching halfway to her elbow.

Criticism to Be Invited

The intrepid Woman's Department Club members are planning to bring in a dozen flower arrangements for Mrs. Biddle to criticise at the “clinic” and the clinician is to fetch along a collection of vases, holders and foliage to demonstrate the underlying principles of flower ar-
rangement.
Mrs. Biddle, who has frequently judged at International Flower Shows and is author of several gardening and flower arrangement books, had the temerity last fall to publish an article on “Debunking
Flower Arrangement”
which, she says,
“brought scores of letters of
approv al and two of hearty condemnation.”
“April,” she declared,
“is the time to make up our minds quickly
to guarantee a house as well as a garden richly adorned with flowers. One of the final tests of a fine garden is the way in which it satisfies
the needs of the house interior.
By carefully planning the flower
harvest we are better equipped to take care of such varied situations as a gala dinner party, the small dimensions of a breakfast nook, the porch buffet supper, the guest room bedside table and the living room
refectory table.” = t- 3 n
