2 SERVICE AIDED ON NORTH SIDE

New Tank Is to Increase Fire Protection and Even Pressure.

More uniform water pressure and better fire protection will be providéd on the far North Side by a new 1500,000-gallon elevated water storage tank under construction in

the 4200 block of Fairview Terrace.| .

The tank, to be completed in June at a cost of about $175,000, was

started by the Indianapolis Water Co. last October to reinforce the water pressure in thé area north of 30th St. and west of the Monon Railroad. One of thé reasons for building the tank, company officials said, is the fact that the area it will serve is about 60 feet higher than the downtown séction, the extra alfitude resulting in reducéd water pressure, particularly during the summer sprinkling season. When the work was started, engineérs sought vainly to keep the neighborhood spectators at a safe distance, fearing they might be injured. Finally, taking a tip from the New York City excavation contractors, they built a platform in a safe location, placed a half dozen benches on it, and now onlookers ¢an “inspect” the work not only in safety but in comfort. Togéthér with a $50,000 program of new North Side water mains, the tank, holding 6450 tons of water, the tank is the first step in

State Employment Service Gives 1402 Here Work, Most in Five Years.

More Indianapolis persons found jobs through the Indiana State Employment service in March than in any other month since the serve ice was established five years ago, George J. Smith, local district manager, sald today. There were 1402 persons hired here during the month, which is 754 more than were hired during the same period ini 1938. Total number of persons hired during the first three months of 1939 was 3161, compared to 1524 hired in the same period last year. “The employment of twice as many persons in the first quarter of 1939 as were hired in the 1938 first quarter is additional evidence of improved business conditions in the Indianapolis district,” Mr. Smith said. “This increase is apparently sound in view of the fact that more than one-fourth of the persons employed were skilled or semiskilled factory workers. Of the total finding jobs in March 927 went to work on jobs of a permanent nature and 475 filled jobs designated as temporary or of 30 days or less duration.” In the service field 332 were employed, 115 were labor jobs; 381 skilled and semiskilled industrial jobs, 249 in domestic jobs, and the remaining 325 were in the commer-

We realize, and want all of you to realize, the laudable part our churches play in community life—their contributions in both a spiritual and material sense toward community welfare and the common good. These churches, their teachings and their membership exert a tremendous influence that touches every home and every business. This function they have in common with our schools, civic bodies and welfare organizations, all of whom, through their various methods and means, perform services for the good and benefit of all.

In recognition, therefore, of the splendid ideals and achievements of Indianapolis churches, we urge everyone to attend an Easter church service. For his own benefit, everyone | e in the spiritual life of
